Hi there,urgent help needed please.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know this site is for working dogs but i need some help from people that know what they are talking about and this site seems the best for that.

We have found ourselves with a lurcher pup..he was going to be destroyed as he was last in litter and the place he was being kept was being knocked down so we decided to take him rather than see him destroyed. We have had him for 1 week, when we were given him he was very thin and fragile, shakey on his legs and vey nervous and timid. A trip to the vets and he seems well on his way to good health and his confidence is growing..phew..we have become very attatched to the adorable little man already....but and its a big but..we were told he was saluki/collie/greyhound/deerhound/bull..being led to believe the bull was staffy but we have since been told that he could be another type of "dangerous bull"..he is going to be a family pet and i really need to know the temperament of these type of dogs as i have heard they are very aggresive and can snap at any time and are not good around other dogs or children. The people we took him from are currently on holiday and we can not get hold of them just yet to verify. My partner had a saluki/collie/greyhound cross for 12 year till he died last year,he was a lovely loyal dog but i have no experience of lurchers.

Any advice good or bad will be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance

J

Regardless of the type of bull in him he will not pose any greater risk to children then any other type of dog whether it be collie, spaniel etc etc..

good luck with your new pup

Hi and thanks loads for your reply..i have just found out that it is the dangerous bull type..and very unsure of what to do now.

Take the pup as you find it. I don't think there is any need for "urgent help" unless the pup has shown signs of bad behavior. I'm sure it will be fine. Give it lots of socializing and put it in many situations, get it down the shops, town centers, boot fairs, take it in the car, on the bus, on a train, take it around friends, over the park, around other dogs, even to a puppy class, just get it out there and keep it under control and give it plenty of love and attention.

Good luck.

You seem to be yet another victim of the scare mongering tactics of those who would have us believe that just because a dog looks like, or has a certain type of breeding in its background, it will be vicious and nasty. There are scores of dogs with Bull breeds in them, APB amongst them, and as long as they are brought up right they are absolutely fine. As an example: if you bring up a child in a horrible, abusive home, there is a much greater chance that it will 'go wrong', maybe become an abuser once adult. However, if you bring up a child in a normal family environment, instil into that child values of right and wrong, then that child has a much greater chance of growing up to be a well balanced human being. The same is true for dogs.

Psychopaths aside, there is no reason for your pup to turn out in any way 'bad'.

Thanks for your reply, thats a really good way of looking at it. There is such a bad stigma around APB,it just makes you very weary.

there are no dangerous dogs mate only dangerous owners.. As above with the right upbringing and exposure to situations/people/environment it will be spot on. If you look up the most common biting dogs you will see pitbulls are way down the list below collies, jack russels, yorkies etc

Good socialising as a pup if the "dangerous bull" in the pup was a "dangerous bull" which is highly unlikly then it has been watered down a lot with other breeds anyway. Good luck with the pup glad to hear its now being looked after
