Drop Nets

I think you are going to spend a lot of money, much more than you need, why don't you look at getting ground with some good sets on

Then get yourself a good basket rigged net 100yds 4z,, or two 50 yards, I used to net using the traditional method, mostly singlehanded and I could handle 100 yards 4z with my hazel pegs no bother on my own, I have only used the rigged net in in 25 yards and another smaller stop net, but they are easy to run out, and I don't have a basket, which I presume makes it easier.

I live in the middle of a several hundred acre farm where nobody nets as far as I know and following some convosations with farmer i think that there will be no problems with permissions and theres plenty of rabbits so that wont be a problem

Well, there you go, get yourself a basket rigged net, that should do the trick, and if you don't get on with it, im sure it would be easy to sell on here, If you are netting at night I personally would not go for a Trammell, a 4 oz net with plenty bagging, should wrap them Bunnies up no problem,

Out of interest anyone know what they charge for these drop systems?

surely a drop system has a better chance for a large bag as you dont risk spooking the rabbits as you set up

ffs i pressed like and i ment to press quote :icon_redface:

the drop net will have to be left possibly unatended and might be stolen or damaged and if you steady enough you will get in most places with the traditional net. it takes a bit more time and effort to master the trad net and not all can manage it but.... if your out as a pest control/selling to a butcher or need to get rid of your own land the drop net is for you (possibly)..

as far as a better chance of bigger bags isnt it possible you could spook the rabbits in the oposite direction when the net falls?

lern the trad net ya lazy sod :whistling:

pest control was the main reason for getting into netting but surely it would be better to get used to putting out a drop net first where you could see what your doing in the daytime and get the hang of using one but still get a return unlike if you tryed dry setting a longnet for practice

as for possibly spooking the rabbits as the net falls it is almost silent as it drops and my area is dominated by arable fields where all the warrens are in the hewdgeline and so there isnt anywhere else for them to go.

perhaps a traditional long net will follow once i have the hang of it but need to prove myself quickly to the farmer because he doesnt mess around with giving permission

thanks for the advice anyway

i havent used a drop net myself and if they almost silent then witht the right wind there wouldnt be a problem, i supose

good luck and happy netting

Drop nets are silent apart from the slider embedding its self into the ground, but by then its in place before the rabbits have heard it and try to make for home and unlike the longnet you dont have to wait for the wind to be right

I am good friends with Agouti (nige) and he has had perhaps as much experience with nets as anyone. What he does say about drops nets is he wouldnt touch them with a bargepole, many have problems dropping correctly every time, often they need to be left up to get rabbits used to going under them which leaves them visible for theft and also if near a hedge they will catch birds and that can get you in big trouble. There are many different ways to control rabbits and personally i dont think this will be your most effective option.

bit of a bold statement have you ever seen one yourself or just reliant on what you have heard from agouti? I also have heard/seen problems with some dropping but that only made myself work out how to perfect the action into 100% every time

as for catching birds only had a problem with 3 woodies in the last 4seasons, likewise they have never been touched and would take some figuring out how to dismantle them in darkness ie draw line and tension lines +transport cant just put it into a poachers pocket  overall I reckon 100yds set up would be in the region of 160lbs +net
