.204 re barrel

I use a 22-250 on fox with a lamp for the longer shots. I've got a night vision add on which isn't recommended for any thing larger than a 223. When looking through the nv it's very hard to judge distance so I want the flattest shooting hardest hitting rifle for use with my nv out to 200-maybe 250 yrds for fox.

you dont want to be shooting anything higher then 40 grain bullets in a 204 as the guy above said you. you are going against what the caliber is made for. shooting light rounds fast and flat. i also wouldnt want a rifle to heavy if your putting nv on it.

 

if you want a 1 in 11 twist barrel on a 20 caliber border barrels price is alot of money you would be better off looking for a used 20 tac. not only would it be cheaper then the price border barrels gave you. but also would more then likely come with 1 in 11 twist. as most people who have them built want to make sure they shoot the 40 vmax.

 

the 39 blizking has a better bc so im told. i no where there is a custom rpa for cheaper then sako money in 204. use the 32's and 39 blizkings in it and it will be deadly for what you want. the only thing that might put you off is the weight. which when using nv you dont really want it to heavy imo

 

if shooting off bipod from 4x4 then thats no problem. if shooting off sticks walking abotu then it will become heavy

I see your point jamie! perhaps I'll forget the varmint barrel Im always on foot. I find the quad and 4x4 tend to send the fox a calling card letting them know Im on my way! Unless it's when there's cubs about then I could use a tractor.

What's your opinions on the lengths of the barrel on the 204? a sako is 23.62 inches and a remmington is 26 inch both (varmint). Does it make any difference to accuracy or help with the weight of bullet?

Long barrels are essential to get the best out of the .204, what difference their will be between the two above I know not, but getting a .204 and chopping the barrel short is counter productive!

Im thinking of the sako as I like the feel of them. Im thinking Im going to just try the lighter bullet with the sako with 1 in 12 and then if it doesn't work get on the phone to border barrels.

I'm getting lost, you are now talking about chucking in your 22-250 for a .204 and then spending another £600+ for a new barrel if it doesn't work. Why don't you just forget it all, keep what you have and trade in the Night Vision?

 

I'd take a 22-250 any day over a .204 for long range foxes!

Let me try and clarify things Im confused myself!

 

I HAD two 22-250's the one couldn't be fitted with a mod and had way to much kick for nv so wasn't really getting used so.... I traded in that 22-250 so I could vary my fac for 204 for free, one for one

I now have a 22-250 with mod and great scope for LAMPING foxes and shooting long range.

I now want a .204???? I think for using with night vision when Im out alone waiting and calling foxes or for shooting lamp shy ones under 250yrds. Instead of the traded in 22-250 I'll still have 1 22-250.So basically I've been trying to get the best 204 which I can afford which suits my needs. Although I've only got a couple of days to get the variation back to definately decide 204.

 

Im now thinking I'll go for a sako 204 but the twist of 1 in 12 seems to slow for the 40g bullet so I've emailed border barrels and they will fit a 1 in 10 to the sako if required. The sako is also shorter than the reme and ruger so I want to try the barrel length to see how I get on with the length before I think about getting a faster longer barrel.

 

That's where Im at right now, but I am going to the shop this afternon so all could change by tonight.

Wait no longer! The saga turns out it's a 9 month wait for a sako. I decided I wasn't going to wait that long so it's a remington 700 vssf II varmint stainless on order. It's 26 inch so I should get the most out of the round for speed and accuracy and with the barrel being that long if the guns shiite I can hit the fox over the head with it. I just figured I may as well try the calibre to see how it performs in my hands that said I didn't like the feel of a vsf I tried in the shop but I'll give it ago. If it doesn't do what I want I'll just vary again and just risk the nv on a new 22-250. THE END: (Unless the guns useless or amazing then I'll be back to report!)

Good choice! The Remi 700 may not be the best "out of the box" but it is the dog's dodgy bits for tuning and tweaking. Pretty good to start with any way. A lot of people in the States started with a Remi, moved to a different action, got peed off and ended up back with a Remi! It strikes me as one of those things you can't predict. The Remi action just works with the .204.
