My terriers, which are the only dogs which live outside all the time, often need twice as much in the winter when its very cold and they're working very hard: I also up their fat intake: usually lamb or beef fat, and I would never bathe them even if they're dirty: takes the natural oils out of their coats. I just give them a good rub down if they're wet, and their kennels are deep boxes full of straw which they can burrow right down in to keep warm.

I make a few changes when they are working hard:

Running dogs get 20-25% more food, terriers almost double

I change the flesh/fat percentages for both dogs from 70%/30% to 60%/40%

cold nights before bed they get some warm lambsmilk replacer/fat/kibble gruel

my pet dogs and dogs in sick bay do not get the increased food but they normally do get the warm gruel

It's not a bad idea to add a little extra as it gets colder and fat is high calorie so somthing fatty will add calories without to much bulk. Porridge is a sound part of the diet as oats contain good amounts of fat and protein plus carbs that are released over an extended period.
