TRUE FELLA ,

THOUGH A 9 WEEK OLD DUCKLING WOULDNT PROVE TOO MUCH OF A MATCH FOR A MINK

ALL THE BEST

DUCKWING

but mink are far stronger than a rat ;)

i still say otter.

YOU COULD BE RIGHT EARTH ,

HARD TO SAY FROM THE OTHER END OF A PC . .....

AND YES A MINK IS A POWERFUL BEAST FOR THE WEIGHT , ..... HOWEVER .... NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE THE RAT , .... IVE SEEN TERRIBLE DAMAGE DONE BY THEM , INCLUDING CARNAGE DONE BY ONE DOE TO A TOP CLASS SHOW RABBIT BREEDERS STOCK , SHE HAD KILLED YOUNGSTERS 3 TIMES THE SIZE OF HER AND DRAGGED THEM UP THE MESH FRONTS INTO A HOLE IN THE EAVES WHERE THE JOIST RAN THROUGH AND THEN THROUGH INTO A INSULATED ROOF .......

WITH THE KILLS BEING DUCKS I ALWAYS LOOK TO THE MOST NUMEROUS PEST FIRST , AND RATS LOVE DUCKLINGS  .... AND WORK BACK ,........ MINK KILLS WOULD HAVE BEEN HEAD DAMAGE ........SO THAT WOULD RULE THEM OUT FOR ME

OTTERS TEND TO STAND ON A KILL AND STRIP THE MEAT FROM THE STILL LIVING VICTIM .SEEN IT HAPPEN ONCE OR TWICE , ...... USUALLY VERY NEAR THE WATER ......

BE INTERESTING TO KNOW THE CULPRIT :hmm:

ALL THE BEST

Interesting indeed Duckwing. The pond they're on is a man made farm pond that the farmer gave me the use of after his 17 farmyard ducks were killed by a fox one night several weeks ago. I tried hard to get the culprit but he was as educated as can be. Calling day or night didn't work. Either did sitting and waiting for him because as soon as he left this farm he went on to a road and strolled by 3 houses. Snaring wasn't an option. My snares would have either been where the farmers dogs might be a risk or along the road I mentioned. Too many walkers for that option.

The earths on the land are deep and have other occupants. Yes, a little fox only bitch to bolt him to guns would work but I haven't got one at the moment.

So when I got the use of the pond I decided to make it more duck friendly. I cut back all cover around it for several feet. I left cover on the island and put feed onto the island to get them on to it. I also got the farmer to make it deeper. He let more water into it making it 4 foot deep one end, six inches the other.

I never seen the ducks leave the water except for the island but the bodies were found on the banks, on their backs well eaten.

I had my rat bait in place before the ducks came along and have kept on top of it.

The dog fox shot was indeed rooting at the dead ducks I placed out in the field but they hadn't a mark on their head. The trout stream near the pond has a good otter population but is not noted for mink. I have a couple of mink traps on it this six months, untouched by mink.

But the morning after the damage was done the remaining ducks on the pond were calm and collected and not spooked like they had been harrased all night.

A head scratcher.

Double strand electric fence around the pond at low level and a slightly higher strand above that will give any wandering predator a bloody good scare and should keep em off. Make some wet muddy areas around the pond that will show up any footprints left by the culprit. ;) A fox trap may be worth trying, that would pick up any otter/mink travelling through too.

6 more ducks killed since. I have no doubt now that it's an otter as one of the ducks was eaten in 6 inches of water instead of being took up onto to the bank. Also I've found his slide into the pond.

We've accounted for a few foxes nearby but the last 2 killed were last night.

The nearby trout stream I mentioned is in full flow with all the recent rain so I suppose our ducks are easy pickings for him.

I'll have to put up a sign saying "no otters".

And 6 more since. There's a rock sticking up in the middle of the pond beside the island with a half eaten duck on it. So I guess that answers my question.

Have you got a trap out yet, if not i would hurry up before there is none left!
