What choke for pigeons ?

Recommended Posts

Over decoys let the birds come in ,,, then you fire choked barrel at an incomer ( slow shot lots of time), then the open second is for a bird leaving in panic not so much time here so the open choke helps

sorry mate i dont agree with that at all,if i miss with my 1st shot i would want to correct it with my 2nd, i wouldnt be looking to rush the 2nd shot any more than the 1st, which ever way the bird is nealy allway's going to be further away hence the tighter choke, there would be exceptions of course if the bird keeps coming towards you, as a type of driven bird but i think the %'s would be far less, anyway my main point was dont read to much into your choking, your swing,mounting and stance are far more important them maybe start thinking about chokes and patterns. atb daz

spot on imo :thumbs:

Hi all :D

I was just wondering if you guys can tell me what chokes you use for pigeons.

The chokes that i'm using in my Lanber are Top barrel : 3 notches Bottom barrel : 4 notches

Sorry , but i don't know the names of the different chokes ,

John :hmm:

Ps : I'm quite new to pigeon shooting and i am missing more than i hit.

I was just wondering if using a tighter choke may increase my hit rate.

It depends on the gun really some have tighter barrels than others but with your lanbar im sure your chokes are spot on. :thumbs: .

I = Full

II = 3/4

III = 1/2

IIII = 1/4

O = true cylinder

You can get variations from this especially when you are buying teague chokes as they can be tighter than they say on the tin 1/2 could be the equivalent to standard a 3/4,best thing to do is stick a 4x4ft board up with wall paper draped down it,and fire some shots of at 35/40yrd's and when you are happy with your shot pattern which should cover the board but not too tight or too loose.

Dont tighten your choke up for now otherwise you will miss more and get frustrated,more open chokes if anything.

My best advice for you is go to your local clay pigeon ground and rattle a few hundred shots off, after that im sure you wont look back.

ive had a few auto's and had no problems with 1/4 choke, but 40g 4's :blink: :blink:i think that is a bit drastic and very expensive for pigeon shooting, i can see where you are coming from, you just have to know your limits and judge your distances you can play with your chokes all you want but i would never shoot 40g 4's at pigeon...atb daz

:laugh: ,,i would not use them on a regular basis but you cant half pull some long shots of with them babies and not many fly of when clipped.

If you have chokes for it I would recommend that you use cylinder and quarter chokes with 7 shot .. let pigeons in close about 30 yards and shoot as though you really mean it swing hard at the bird shoot and keep swinging with your head down and looking at the bird and never the gun barrels . When you kill a few you will gain confidence and then you can tighten up the chokes a bit to extend your range. I am not a fan of tight chokes or large shot and do all my shooting with either cylinder quarter or at a push half.

every one to there own though, ATB

i have 1/4 and 1/2 on my old s/s,pretty good combination for most game i find,as for missing the birds,well without watching you shoot can only hazard a guess

The most annoying problem i have is when the bird flies directly towards you.

Today i had one coming straight at me so i waited till it was in range and lined up for the shot. As it approached i pulled the trigger and followed through ( i think )

and after both barrels were fired the damm thing just swerved and flew away.

Bloody infuriating i tell you ,

Jonn :(

Try not to have a curry the night before!!

my opinion from my experiance is 3/4 and full, (yes i know 99% of others like less choke) but this is what suits me, ohhh and i also find it clean kills them much better and they'll fall straight into your patten without you havin to go set them up!!! and if your missing, well if i do that, i look at the wind, how strong is it? if its blowin gently.... a good bit of lead, if its a strong wind an looks to be holding the pigeons in mid air/moving very slow. then start by shootin at the tip of the beaks then moving it out slightly more each time. YES im awhere that this sounds strange but when i started shooting pigeons it was all by myself and found them compleatly different to clays which was what i shot almost exclusivly up untill i found this amazing form of shooting! ohh and the best tip i was ever given.......dont get frustrated at missing, 'cus you'll only shoot worse! think about where your wadding went, often a good combat indacator where your shot went!

good luck!
