Confused on what to buy .22 or 177

Just to throw a curve to this topic.

 

Years ago my gunsmith friend had a .20 cal Sheridan Silver Streak pump up rifle.

There were not many good pellets available so, being a bit anal, he made a bit of kit to sleeve down .22 to .20 to suit his barrel.

It was very accurate and hard hitting!

I asked him at the time about calibre for the rifle I was getting he said .177 but if you could get a good .20 cal it would be the best option!

I went at the time for .22

 

So my question here is why has no manufacturer ever bothered with .20 cal in air powered rifles?

 

Incidentally he made a custom varmint centrefire earlier this year in .20 cal and it was awesome!

 

theoben do the evolution gas ram and all rapid variations in .20, and theyre doing mk1 rapids in .25 too. gotta admit i quite fancy a .25 mortar one day...

.22, leaves more room for error.

 

How so? If I was asked to attribute that quality to any calibre it would be the .177 because of it's lack of energy transfer? I suspect the argument for this statement, might be the flatter trajectory of the .177 and some people interpret this as being more accurate; but i know in reality, in the field this isn't so as people shooting .22 know the characteristics of the .22 and compensate accordingly, nullifying the theoretical advantage of this flatter trajectory.

Well if you miss a little .22 does more damage.

 

You can't go far wrong with a good .22 cal rifle but people should try both and make up their own minds.

I have always said its entirely down to ones own Personal Preferance

 

Funnilly I actually have no preferance for either cal

 

I use .22's for hunting, because its what I have available; if my S200 had been a .177, then that would be cal for hunting. I got the .22 version just because the rifle that I had been offered happened to be a .22. If it had been a .177 then I would have taken it just as easily as I did the .22 and I would have learn't its little peculiarities just as I have this one. My results would still be a bunch of dead animals and destroyed bullseye paper targets
