Hi local yokel and guys , sorry for late reply , i have not posted for while - been a busy boy

As regards to using the 6.5 for ginger i am currently running a 6.5-284 with the 140 a-max for foxes , i also use this rifle for target / longrange varmint and deer control...

 

I hope these pictures do not offend , they are just a demonstration of terminal performnce of the 6.5 bullet and in this case its mustard on ginger

I can see what Baldie meant by sausage bullets now! :sick: Great set up there Varminter and good pics. Green with envy Is that a T8 on a fluted barrel? If is is thats gonna be something else on the wish list.. I didn't know they could fit on them as i thought bush would not be able to create a seal.. so to speak... like i said GREAT set up... and results

[LocalYokel The T8 is a sealed unit and it dont mater realy about groves or twists down the barrel. The seal as you call it is only a stabilizer to make the moderator ridged with the barrel. Don't worry about feeling daft i know of a very clever gun chap who had the same thoughts. :11: BALDIE

hi i gladed you liked the pictures of rifle , the rifle is a RPA QUADLITE action and trigger unit with a BORDER fluted 26 inch 1 in 8.5 twist barrel , the stock is a MCMILLAN LAZERONI model and of course REFLEX moderator.

With the moderator i can spot my hits either when foxing / longrange varminting or deer culling.

I use LAPUA brass which i fully prep / FEDERAL 210 match primers / 50grains of HODGDON 4831SC powder and the 140 A-MAX seated ten the into lands....

Oh buy the way when using this load with the moderator thier is no mistaking when you hit target , this is because the sound of impact is lowder than report of rifle

Well ly, i don't know were the hell my reply went so i'll write it again, hornady do a 95grain v-max in 6.5x55 loaded with 48.5g of n160 its trippin t around 3100fps drop is 6.5in at 300 and 19.5in at 400 with a 200yrd zero. but be warned, you'll be looking at bits of fox rather than a fox...!!! put a mod on or you'll be deaf... when shootin alot of foxes. as it's a hell of a bang

Bought a 6.5 x 55 Steyr pro hunter last autumn, BRILLIANT, does everything and then some.

Honest foxy doesnt care what calibre you use, JUST MAKE SURE IT IS SAFE.

I have been looking at what to apply for as my first CF as I have been asked to help with the fox control on our shoot and went out on Tuesday for the first time. I took my .17HMR wth 20 grain bullets which I thought would be okay for the job. In 90 minutes, we saw 11 foxes but of the safe shots that presented themselves, only one was within 100 yards and we did not have enough time to get a shot away on this one. There were six more opportunities to shoot but we felt that they were too far away - 150 to 250 yards - for the rifle that we had. This got me thinking about a CF again.

 

My questions are: If I was to apply for a centre fire rifle and only wanted to use factory ammo, which calibre should I go for? Is the 6.5X55 relatively easy to get ammunition for and for both deer and fox work? Secondly, I have had my FAC for over a year and have 7000 acres approximately that are passed for everything up to 308 - is it likely that the application for a CF will be granted or is a 6.5X55 too much too soon?? Not sure... Key thing though is which calibre??? As a footnote, I also have permission to stalk Roe on our shoot so at some point this year will be doing my DSC 1 and applying for a deer rifle. Maybe I should wait for this although I think I could do with a foxing calibre sooner than that.

 

Is the 6.5X55 what I need? I want something that I can use in the long term for fox and all deer species in the UK.

 

All replies and advice gratfully accepted. What do you reckon Baldie?

Snelly the 6.5x 55 is a great round for deer, fast and flat, but the cost of the ammo this side of the water was alot more expensive than the .243 which i sold the 6.5, and bought a .243,

Only due to lack of fund's i would of kept it. but for a duel purpose round the .243 is excellent, i use this cal mainly for fox work but have no problem taking red's with it either, so its decision time for ye. with the right bullets anything is possible i would recommend the 95 grain v-max round in 6.5 for fox with a hot load, and for deer the 129 grain sst round for deer.

With the .243 i use 58 grain v-max and 70grain blitzking for fox, and 95 grain nosler and 95 grain sst for deer, can't fault these rounds.

The 6.5x284 is awesome cal for target work, at the extended ranges, it's just like the 6.5x55 only on steriods, nice weapon that, i want one

Snelly, the swede is a great cartridge, but to get the best out of the huge weight range of bullets, you must reload.If you are willing to do this, you will never need another rifle, as it will do fox, small deer, and the very biggest reds in rut, with the correct choice of bullets. The range is around 90 grains for fox, right up to 170 grains for moose. The 6.5 cartridge, probarbly has more available bullet types than any other. If you dont intend to shoot reds, get a .243.

6.5 x55 had a wide choice of heads from 60g to 160g , so from hare to red deer is superb, even if you dont reload, privvy ammo is £40 -100

 

& range can be as much as 1100 yds .....good......

 

& can also be taken right down to 1300fps !! or maxed to woweeeeeeeeeeeeeee...flat & sharp

 

the best cal you could own ..imo
