Rifle??

Hi, ive got a shotgun lisence, and a shotgun, but want to get a rifle for lamping rabbits ive got about 2000 acres in total to shoot over, just wondering how hard it is to get a lisence??

What gun would be best for rabbit shooting at about 100 yards??

I would apply for a .17hmr and slip in a .223 for fox as well in for a penny in for a pound.

It depends on your circumstances whether it is easy or not to obtain a FAC.Having a shotgun cert won't do you any harm.Depending on the police force it should only take 3 months but I have known it to take 6 months.

The questions being asked now are what kind of experience you have with a class1 firearm and who or when you experienced it with.

If you really wanted to speed it up go and sit the DSC1 and put in for a deer calibre with the view to booking stalking days here and there(An open certificate is needed then )There's always more ways to skin a cat.

I have known that to speed it up.

Ask the local firearms guy for an informal chat and he'll answer all your questions because 1 force differs from another.

It would also help to get the farmer/landowner to give you written permission to use a class 1 firearm

Hi,Avon and Somerset Police are pretty good.As long as you have permission(from a land owner - before you apply)and,you have a rifle/shotgun cabinet and seperate ammo cabinet.I would advise you to go for a .22 rimfire first(with a silencer-don't forget to get permission for the silencer put on your licence).You can always apply for a variation to your licence at any time to add a fox rifle or a deer rifle(you must attend and pass the dsc1 though before they will put deer on your licence).Good luck though whatever you go for.

Hey Martin and Barky... im from Brizzel too.

 

I had a Ruger 10/22 Volquartzen for a couple of years... quality rifle , accurate out to 100 yrds, cheep ammo so a pretty good choice... especially for night shooting. You may find they don't cycle the subsonic rounds too well and may need tuning to sort this out but is a cheap job. The only bone of contention i had was the magazine .

 

I've now got a Anchutz thumbhole .17 HMR... which i have to say is the dogs balls and soooo accurate. There is still a bit of a crack even with a SAK mod on the end but the trajectory is pretty much table top flat from 50 to 130 yrds and only minor adjustment is needed to take this out to 150... 170... even 200yrds if you were steady enough. The ammo is more expensive at approx £11 for 50 but they are TERMINAL and best of all are very unlikely to ricochet.

 

A cz .22 is about as reliable as they get... they are cheap, accurate and good for both mooching and night shooting.

 

You're a lucky bugger having 2000 acres mate... i have to go to Dorset to get any sport. Your app for a rimfire will be a formality mate.

 

Avon & Somerset are pretty good... i think Jeff Morgan is the chap who does the home visits... a real barotone worzel but a good chap. Jackie in the processing department is the best person to address variations and apps to.

You MUST have written permission from the landowner, they will not grant , without it, unless you are a rifle club member.When you apply for land, dont forget , you will require a sound moderator, and expanding ammunition too.

sounds like you have a good amount of land to shoot over. have a word with the farmer or farmers ?

tell them what you would like to do and ask him or them ? if its ok. then get him to sign a letter saying he will let you shoot over here with ? ie 22lr,17hmr,223, like that. then get your forms fill them in and send them off.

i would go for 22lr and 17hmr and put down 223 you never no. i put in for fac air rifle to as its a nice piece of kit to have for pigeon and tree rat shooting and crows in the trees. where the other rifles WOULDNT be usedfor safety reasons but im sure you no that

i or so got maps printed out of my shoot. as when the feo came round he then could see i new the layout of the land. best of luck

Hello 2000acre is a fare bit land & if you get all that in writing from land owner's or sporting right's holder's then push the boat out & go for 3 rifle's with mod's.I would go for 22lr/17hmr & a 243 as it make you deer legal in Britian & you can buy or load light ammo say 70g etc for foxing & 100g for deer.An FAC would give you & your land owner's a bit more lee way for dealing with stuff & you will want more rifle's once you get into it so go for the 3.
