what x makes the best lamping dog.???

Recommended Posts

Its got to be lurcher to lurcher for me.Though i had a saluki/grey first cross that wernt bad .I have never had mutch luck with lurchers with a lot of greyhound in them ie 3 quarter breds.Though some make very good lampers.

My mate runs a colliexgreyx salukixgrey, and it is 9 years old, and it still can knock over 20-25 rabbits in a night. It as great stamina, good retriever and quick recovery rate. And it as stayed sound for years. Dont think you get will many lurchers that ( can+want to) do that amount of work at that age. So in my book this is what i would call a(very good x) as a lamping dog.

think youve answerd the question with your mates dog bird

but as for what x i think it is more down to the individual dog and the owner(conditioning, training etc)

that dog sounds a topper by the way to still be doing them numbers at that age, would like to have seen him in his prime

snipe 9 years old still doing it.?

i think it depends on the land and choosen quarry .Most lads i know lamp mainly with collie crosses for rabbits and foxes. One or two run whippetxhounds for rabbits and they tend to be getting good numbers

localy forget the colie first crosses the small beddies for lamping you need a dog that can run a bit ,so far what ive saw in twenty five years been mostly strong fast colie type ,good saluki crosses to good fast collie type ,years ago fast deerhoundy type, small dogs dont cut it localy as some nites slips are 100 to 200 yrds then they have to get them out of beam alot so have to have the leg to get there and the stamina to catch it ,either fast strong saluk type or well bred big greyhound whippet cross saluk type of the write breeding , slo mos or unfit dogs dont do to well on big 60 acres plus feilds with undulating land ,pre ban all testing qaurry even for rabbits , you never get big nites butt hey dont hang about ,somenites its like a day time course , others well not much sport ,its testing land for a dog

to me a lamping dog must have these attributes...

stamina

guts

brains

skill

speed

stength

i have recently seen dogs of collie blood, that are well established rabbit dogs only go for rabbits that in there head they think they can catch, ie, sitting out and squatters, personally this isnt my cup of tea, and if anythink there is abit to much brain there for its own good, a good lamping dog should try for every rabbit you send it out at, or anythin you choose to lamp, as there is always a chance that the quarry will panick with a good pressure on it, and jolt into feild and be caught off a hedge row! sp out of a lamping dog i would like a good drive to please and the willingness to try is always thing i look for.

not yet mate, he as had alot of (20- 30 runs) best catch was 27 one night. And alot were long slips. The last out got 11 from 18 runs, that was hard night it was quite warm.He was fecked that night, he only stops if he runs out of steam. But thats the same for all lurchers.I HAVE HAD TO CARRY HIM BACK TO THE MOTOR A FEW TIMES. But regards picking runs, not yet, but alot of people say colliexs more so 1xs, as they get older do think to much about it :wallbash: . He is 3 in sep, i will have to wait and see. Bullxs(line bred)lurcher-lurcher seem good lamp dogs maybe thats the way to go. :hmm:

IT DEPENDS ON INDIVIUAL DOG ,IT ISNT JUST COLLIE CROSSES WHAT PICK THERE RUNS IVE SEEN SALUKI ,BULL CROSSES PICK THERE RUNS ,BUT SAYING THAT ITS DOWN TO THE MAN BEHIND THE DOG WATCHING IF THE DOG NEEDS A BLOW,I HAVE HAD ALL SORTS OF GOOD LAMPING DOGS,BUT MY BEST ONE WAS A 1X COLLIE GREYHOUND WHICH DIDNT NO WHEN TO GIVE UP.IN MY OPINION FOR GENERAL LURCHER WORK LAMPING RABBITS, YOU WONT BEAT A GOOD COLLIE CROSS BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION.

saw all sorts lampping rabbs to date colie grews are up there as the best but ive saw a handy saluk cross collie cross , she hedges them out and wham in the pot ,and last the nite were the collie you would have to watch some nite sif not real fit , saw some [bANNED TEXT] clebver dogs taking rabbits etc

best lamp dogs I've had was a first cross saluki greyhound bitch. First night out she didn't catch anything, second night she had 11 or 12 and i stopped her before i got to carried away and pushed her to far. 2nd one was a saluki type match dog put to a collie greyhound, if he could see it he would run it, even if he couldn't he would run out.

If i wanted a specialist lamping rabbit dog. To lamp a few rabbits 3or4 nights a week i would go a WhippetXGreyhound. If i wanted to lamp a lot of rabbits 3or 4 nights a week i would go WhippetX greyhoundX Saluki. :victory:
