hancock lurchers

Recommended Posts

I bet Mr Hancock wishes he had a tenner for every post on here relating to his kennels, or posts on other sites for that matter.

My views are fairly simple and based on seeing a few over the years; if you are looking for a decent collie lurcher and you want to be sure of what you are getting then they are worth a look. Also, given the legal restrictions on hunting a collie cross is, in my view, ideal. I think people over-estimate the 'worker to worker' or 'superdog x terminator' lurcher x lurcher matings which can themselves be problematic and I despise the bull cross fashion which is the final death nail for respectable working lurcher sport, fact. Historically the lurcher was a herding dog crossed with a running dog and that is precisely what Hancock does and in reality I think there are probably more bad Hancock owners than bad Hancock dogs. It has been rightly pointed out that collie crosses need time, socialising, training and stimulation. I fear that the 'lock it in the run until we go out lamping' brigade might well find a collie based lurcher beyond them. In fact I shudder at the thought of my old beardie cross being in the hands of morons with lower brain capacity than she possesed.

I personally do have a slight issue with the commercial nature of the operation and I would probably opt for a private bred dog of similar breeding if there was one available from a trustworthy source. Having said that I accompanied a friend on a visit to pick up a pup last year and to be fair the criticisms of the conditions there were simply untrue as the kennels were well kept and all the dogs looked healthy and clean.

Finally, you also have to agree there are some cracking looking working Hancock dogs posted on this thread, like it or not hancock doubters!!!

This is one of the most sensible, honest, and truthful replies ive read on this site for along time, I,m not a Hancock fan, ive nothing personally against the guy, but his type of collie greyhounds he breeds aren,t for me, I,d sooner breed my own has I know whats in them, and what their attributes and capabilities are, and has regards the worker x worker or superdog x terminator lurcherx lurcher matings I totally agree with you. Regards Collie John.

back in 80,s he did breed some canny dogs I bought one from him from stud dog called "erroll" I think my quarry was mostly teeth /hoof and this pup done ok? but not enough drive for my liking kept him for 3 yrs to see if he would improve but sadly never did -I gave him to my mate as a mooching dog and he lived a canny life -I then took a mate with a working greyhound bitch to a farm in yorkshire to be mated with a very hard working collie -bitch produced 5 pups I took one and hand on heart he had everything that hancock dog lacked - bunnies till he got bored with them lol then teeth /hoof until the grand age of 11 yrs old -working lines is best way to go imho

A lot of what u say is true but you can buy a pup that says there dog has done this and done that and it's done f all plus if you buy a pup from someone that's selling from a back garden they tell u it's this cross and that and it's probably got nothing of the sort they are just doing the same as hancock trying to sell them trying to make a few pounds at least with him you know what you are getting. If I wanted a genuine first cross i could wait 12 months and his price's are no more than u see on the net and probably less Seen a bull cross this week 1500 pound world beater and for some young person starting out that wants a collie cross I would say if that's what u want go to hancock because there is enough people on here that would tell u a load of shirt so I rest my case

Me mate got a Hancock dog, it has made 29tts ffs

a mate of mine had one like that from him back in the 80s, it was the slowest starting dog I,ve ever seen and still acted like a pup until it was over two, sadly when it finally started working well it would knock up a toe or two and need a week or two off every time we done a nights lamping, I had a rescue dog at the time cost me £2.50 from the local shelter, mostly whippet, she would beat him to the punch everytime and even though she was tiny she would kill fox,s at a rate of about 10-1 against the giant Hancock, I have an old photo of them both together somewhere I,ll try and put it up if anyone's interested

This has been discussed a million times on here, if I thought his pups were of the standard his early stuff was I'd have one in a heartbeat but the sad facts are that they are puppy farmed rubbish bred to be pets, every now and then a pup with a decent genetic make up will be matched to someone like bird dog, that lucky pup will get worked and be a decent worker but the other 99 in the hundred will amount to nothing, I had 3 or 4 different crosses bred from 80's "Hancock" stuff and the work ethic was great, the best for me was a 5/8 grey/ collie cross out of "Chuckles", first night on the lamp she killed 7/7 rabbits, daytime hare's, pheasant, snatch pigeons out the sky when a flock got up after stalking them, murdered fox, she was only small with a "Chuckles" curly tail but a stone cold killer of anything, you cannot in any way compare the sh*t produced today to anything we had back then, my lad had 2 off him, 1 after the other off the "naughty boys" a couple of years back neither lasted more than 18 months, both dead in the ground, just not hardy at all, slightest knock and that was that, breeding off hard tested dogs that are out everyday working is the only pup to buy, they are stronger all round in constitution, stamina, natural fitness, drive, etc,, buy from "hancock" only perpetuates him and "Sally" making an easy living and see's dogs being kept cruelly in kennels without ever seeing the fields or work, he needs shutting down or his operation reduced to a couple of greyhound bitches, I've had the tour twice and took a lot of photo's when last there, I'm ashamed to say I met him through Plummer a number of times and liked him better as a tulip and daffodil bulb seller, WM

. This post his very true chuckles sire was a hard robust animal live on a chain back a trailer he would eat yas if he did not know ya and on was in range he ws the key and the reason chuckles was a decent producer ,shame chuckles was not used much seeing he was only a plai type was not enough fa Hancock back then ,Dave sleight used chuckles also canny man was after the work ethic.atbbunnys

Hancocks again !

They are bred from dogs that have never worked for generations, not only that they are not even socialised. If your looking for a working dog why would anybody go there. Dogs from non working parents have also never been tested in the field so they might not be upto it physically either and will pass on ailments/conditions that would be found and bred out in working lines. The best working animals across the world are all bred from generations and generations of workers, be it horses, dogs, birds etc.
