Choosing a Stud

Question for you lot I've got plenty of time well at least over a year? We have a golden retriever who is currently 18 months old, in the near future we will be looking to discuss with our vet about hip score and eye test. If the results are good enough that we can carry on the breed, at the end of next years shooting season we would like to look at her having a litter otherwise we will look at spaying.

 

In the shooting circle I am part of, Spaniels and Labradors are the only other dogs so I am worried about finding a sire and I’m also worried about interbreeding. Looking back in her parentage her lineage has some common names in Lincolnshire, On doing a family history check we actually found out she was the great grand niece of our previous bitch.

 

 

So how does picking a sire work, who do I turn to for help? Is there a magazine with a list of names of people who have dogs in stud, are they happy that you check them out can they turn us down, we would rather not show dogs as they tend to be very big and seem to be changing from golden to a white colour, so we are also more looking towards field. What about cost would you know roughly how much it costs? Do the stud dog owners take a puppy, sorry for these questions but we have never done this before and if we decide that we will do it we would rather it was right.

 

Having seen some of the puppy farms when we searched for this little madam and turning them down (note some are a lot better than others) I would prefer some independant advice, hence the reason asked on here.

Hi there, Im not sure if this will help you or not but I know of a guy near Doncaster who is a gun dog trainer and breeder and he has some lovely golden retrievers!

I have been to his kennels myself. Yes, he earns his money from training and selling Gun dogs and breeding them but he does not have endless amounts of dogs there!

Obviously everyone has their own experiences but mine have been fine.

 

I took a friend there to buy a lab. I thought Alan was very open and honest about the dog. He gave a full demo of what we decided we wanted to see on the day, we put all the blind retrieves out and told him exactly what we wanted to see the dog do. We even shot over it and my friend is still happy to this day.

 

You could obviously say that all gun dog kennels are dealers coz to be honest, yes thats what they do, deal in dogs. There is a big market in trained gun dogs after all.

And how many horse dealers are there in the country?

 

Im certainly not saying that your wrong Paul spaniel, he does, like many other gun dog kennels, deal in Gun dogs.

Well we are not going to rush into anything at the moment and we are only seeking advice although independant advice would be advantageous, but I suppose anyone in the 'business' is going to sell themselves. With ours we believe she has a lot of potential her great grandmother was an outstanding field dog, as was one of her brothers' therefore we would like to look at continuing that line as we want to keep at least one of the litter.

he is a dog dealer like alot of gundog kennels, but he has the best lines going on in his dogs so he will have a stud suitable for sure.
