Hi

The combined hammer/spade/billhook was often sold as a Gamekeepers Friend in the Victorian Edge Tool Catalogues of most of the Sheffield makers.... Sadly I have never seen one in the 'flesh' but would be interested in any other images of these or similar tools for my archives....

More common was the combined billhook hammer - common being a relative term as these are also like hen's teeth, I have only seen three or four in thirty years of edge tool collecting, and just managed to buy one (at an exhorbitant price)....

For more info on billhooks see: www.billhooks.co.uk

I saw one of these at a tool stall at a boot sale a couple of weeks ago. And ,yes it would have been an expensive buy !.

When i was a kid, my mate fell into a pit trap set in the local wood: 3 feet deep with a sharpened wooden stake in the middle, covered with branches and grass!

It was not a pretty sight: The spike went into the skin on his ankle and came out of the skin on his knee; naturally, an ambulance was need to resolve matters

Turns out there was a local nutjob who'd put 3 of them in the local wood and my mate was unlucky enough to be the one and only victim....
