what is the difference between 20 bore and 12 bore?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what the difference between 20 bores and 12 bore was for killing power. ie if you had a 28gram 20 bore cartridge and a 28gram 12bore cartridge, what would the difference be between the two?

Amount of shot contained in the cartridge

oh, but surely if both cartridges were 28gram and size 6 shot then the amount of shot in the cartridge would be the same?

Yes Exactly the same in the example you gave.

A 12 bore is generally proofed to accept more weight of lead than a 20 bore. Most 12g will accept 36g and some even 42g

You would need to read the feet per second printed on the box to confirm that.

If the feet per second are the same and the shot size is the same and the shot load in grams is the same then no difference between 12 and 20

What about the difference in the amount of powder???

Most of the game cartridges will shoot the same in either 20bore or 12bore in a 1oz load ie 28g in fps & i dont know if the powder charge is diffrent. A 20bore can pattern a little tighter due to smaller bores of that of a 12bore. Modern guns are now made with a 3" chamber now so you could push the 20bore out to 32g loads but it deffeats the porpose of the gun & kicks quite bad & wouldent be nice to shoot many cartridges through it. 20 bores are good guns & can kill as far as a 12 bore but as stated the 12bore comes into its own on high stuff with better pellet volume.

The smaller bore sizes will throw a longer shot string...............obviously slightly-dependant on chokes, but if the velocity for both carts is the same, each individual piece of shot will have similar kinetic energy at normal ranges.

Horses for courses, really. If you put the string in the right place at the right time it'll kill the bird. The cartridge isn't really the issue though, to my mind. A lot of people prefer the slightly lighter weight & handling of the smaller bores. No difference in killing power though
