i work on reception at a vets surgery the only insurance company we will not deal with directly (meaning you the owner has to pay for all treatment up front) is E & L in ALL its forms. petplan are good payers and dont quibble more expensive than most though!

make sure you get a lifetime policy then any condition is covered for life, yearly policies will not cover a condition after the end of the first year it was diagnosed.

dont tell them it is a working dog just crossbreed is fine-thats what they are!

if you get a lifetime policy do not let it lapse!

insurance will not cover any routine work including dentals unless there is a medical reason for it

check with insurance company about breeding from bitches we had an emergency cesarian come in the other day £1000 lter insurance company would not pay as the owner made the decision to put the bitch in pup and therefore at risk.

my insurance is that i work for a vet and have done for twenty years-most of what i could not afford i would not choose to put my dogs through!!!

E&L are terrible, no wonder your boss doesn't deal with them. I had my first pony insured with them, just an ordinary heinz57 14hh pony and after the first year they put my premium up to £100 for a 10 year old pony valued at £500 with no claims against him! And that was 20 years ago and was a lot of money then. I would never use them again for anything.

I agree that there are many treatments I wouldn't put any of my animals through, like cancer treatment, apart from removal of a small tumour for example. But the trouble is that even tests to determine an injury or illness now are so expensive that I think insurance is necessary.

Two examples: my Whippet bitch was hit by a collie running flat out last year, she was paralysed from the middle of her back so my vet did x-rays, couldn't see anything, I took her through to the Dick Vet where they did scans etc and saw a spinal specialist, she stayed at my vet and the Dick Vet for a total of a week after which I had her pts as there was no improvement and nothing anyone could find to repair. Including cremation (the cheapest option) that cost me just over £1500. I could have had her pts straight away but if there had been a burst disc or something repairable I may have opted for surgery if my vet advised it, or the nerve damage that it turned out to be could have started to improve in that week. So I couldn't have had her pts without trying. After the first 24 hours there was little pain.

My current horse got bunged up overnight at 5 months old, after two visits on the same day by my own vet we took Kelpie to the Dick Vet, scans found a haematoma in his rectum, he was there for 5 days, on drips and 24 hour care as he was so young, he came home and went back a week later for another scan to make sure the lump was reducing (straight home afterwards) and he has never looked back - he is 14 now. Total bill from the Dick Vet, £750 not including my own vet's fees.

Unfortunately I didn't have insurance in either of these cases, when Kelpie was ill I was better off and could afford the bill, I am still paying my Whippets bill - I had to get a bank loan to pay the Dick Vet as they don't do credit and I have only paid approx half of it off. Insurance at under £20 and month would have been far preferable to the £80 a month I am paying for the loan!

You can get forms for 4 weeks free insurance with Petplan from Pets at Home and some vets by the way, after that they ring you and ask if you want to carry on with the insurance, and you can get whatever cover you want, there are different levels. Also you can get money towards advertising if your dog is lost or stolen, plus the third party insurance in case your dog causes a road accident etc.

My vet has their own policy, around 150.00 each per year.

This plan includes all jabs, neutering if wanted, and no excess, but excludes costs of sending samples to specialist labs, they are extra.

My 2 have been there 4 times between them so far this year for minor things, had there boosters and the terrier has been neutered, so it's been fairly good so far.

Sounds good, who are you with???

It's just my local vet, they are not a nationwide company.

So far I've been very pleased with them, I suppose if ever something major comes up will be the time I know if it's good or not.

Tesco premium cover for me too got both dogs covered and got a discount think its £13 for 1 and a £10 for the other, 1 of the wifes realatives have been travelling from tamworth to the rvc in london with 1 of there dogs its cost over £10k but they only stumped up the 1st £100 , madness in my eyes the dog should have been pts but then thats there choice not mine, but it certainly proves the value of a good insurance policy!
