Very Long Range Rabbit Gun

Recommended Posts

You are not able to cast bullets of this type. They are semi jacketed, with means the lead core is covered in a hard coating with is not possible to replicate in the home environment. Shame though!!

Edited to add, they are jacketed to prevent fragmentation because of the high energy they are subjected to in firing and impact on the target.

But it seems a lot of people do it, and with a lot of success and accuracy. A quick google of cast bullets and 22 hornet gives A LOT hits. Here's one:

No one mentions fragmenting. In fact the only problems I've heard with cast bullets was leading in the barrel - reduced by adding a gas check and reducing chamber pressure. I'm not trying to be a smart arse, but have done a little reading on the subject and haven't heard it mentioned much. Is it a problem with all cailbres, or just the smaller ones?

Also Corbin makes a tool to convert spent 22lR cases into .224 jackets (hornet,222,223,22-250 etc.), along with the mold for the bullets. They also do one to convert 22WMR cases to ~6mm bullet jackets (243,25-06 to name a couple).

I am currently looking for a very long range rabbit, vermin/ medium range Fox gun, and have narrowed down my choices to:     1. .22 Hornet 2. .17 Ackley Hornet.   Why, well taking the reloading

Well, after a couple of weeks or research and investigation icon_eek.gif

I have just put in a variation for a Hornet.

I think that will be the tool to try first, then if it all goes to feck, re barrel as an Ackley .17.

But I have high hopes for the little .22angel.gif

And I am prepared to work at it a bit....

yeah, basically... I want some fun.

The .243 in its brutalist form is still costing 40-50p a shot,

The .22lr is great fun, but limited range.

I want to do a bit of sniping on rabbits and crows/, in a very large piece of safe ground to shoot. With occasional fox, without dragging the .243 out and without the nagging cost in the back of my mind.

I want to improve my skills as a marksman and reloader.....it is one of those things that I just want to do.

This fits the bill,

Also, I have never built a custom rifle, so this will fit the bill there too!

I have always described my self as a 'Countryman, who shoots' not a 'shooter living in the country', but I am prepared to change laugh.gif

And just to show you how much of a departure this is for me..

IMG_0442.jpg

13gr Lil' gun over a 35gr Vmax vs 36 gr N140 over a 87gr BTHP

or put simply

25p (currently) vs 60 p odd on the 243

Brought a few bits of glass, not sure whats going on what yet.

Leupold European 30mm 3-9x50mm..probably the .22lr

Zeiss Diavari 30mm 2.5-10x50mm probably Sauer

ut the Nikko Diamond 30mm 4-12 x 56mm on the Hornet??

So one will go on the CZ, may put 1 on the Sauer .243... Not sure yet.

Out of cash for now.

For some strange reason the likes of the Hornet and .22Magnum (WMR) have gone out of fashion over the last 10-20 years.

I suspect this is down to the influence of RFD on new impressionable shooters (but certain bits of legislation have not helped).

It is heartening to note that a hardcore of experienced shooters stayed true to these calibres and the reality is beginning to dawn on more now!

There is most definately a place in todays shooting world for the Hornet and WMR!!!:thumbs::thumbs:

just out of curiosity, how much was the cz american in hornet?

I got it second hand, RFD'd up from down south, delivered to a friend of a friend with an rfd.

It is in as new condition..£475, with 2 mags, rings etc.

I looked at a lot of other rifles for a long period of time, and really held on for the right rifle..

I haven't shot it yet, but due to a complete change of scopes on 3 of my guns...I have them all to zero on Sunday.

Looking forward to it.....thumbs.gif

I had a complete rethink of my cabinet.
