It's very much a "you pays your money and takes your choice" really. They all work at reducing noise, whether you have new foam ones at every shoot, or buy electronic earmuff types.(These will also hold your hat on in a wind!)

I have some personal moulded ones for industrial use, these cut out all the noise, but I can't hold a conversation between stands. I also have some "sonic" ones, but the rubber sealing rings are breaking up, so need to replace them. These sonics, or custom moulded ones with similar performance, are probably the best. Or at least, the most convenient, as the shot noise is well muffled, but you can still hear talk.

I've been using these for a few years now and find them very good. You can hear normal level sounds, speech etc, but are effective against gunfire.
