410 cartriges

Recommended Posts

just got a 410 Hushpower for abit of vermin and rabbitt control, i know they recomend subsonic cartriges, but i was wondering if i could use anyother sort aswell its a Bikel 410 fully moderated with a 3'' chamber. cheers :whistling:

If you use a subsonic cart (I've not seen any but I suspect someone makes them) you will not get a sonic boom, so the "hush" only has to moderate the propellant bang (which is all it can do anyway)....but then you end up with a tool with an arc like a rainbow and possibly the range to make it to the end of your garden :whistling::hmm:

May I suggest clubbing the prey to death, probably about as useful generally!

If you use a high (normal) velocity cart then you will get a sonic boom..f**k all the "hush" can do about that!

Eley make a 3" subsonic but the standard 2" carts are quieter !

Best of using 3" magnums for most stuff as its still quieter than a normal 410.

Eley cartridges arent the best, although they do use a felt wad as advised by hushpower.

My mates got a silenced 410 and we use that lamping from the quad - he drives and lamps and I shoot. It's suprisingly effective and I'm a shotgun noob! He bought a box of 2" carts and TBH I thought they were shit. I couldn't hit anything unless It was REAL close. As soon as I switched back to the 3" magnums? I was dropping them well. Don't quote me but I think the 3" carts were eley magnums, as I say shotguns arn't my thing but It's certanly more effective than shooting them with the air rifle when you have alot of ground to cover.

as i said earlier i think i'm going to have to try afew diffrent cartriges to find out what suits me.But thanks for all your input lads.I'm trying at the moment the Eley four long two and half inch cartriges but i'll goin to try the magnums i think, i'll let you know how i get on. cheers ian

I've had a silenced .410 for more than 30 years, you can use all .410 ammo in it, Eley make subsonic 3" cartridges, I use them and kill rabbits at full range and they are much quieter than standard 3" shells. I wish some people would restrict themselves to only giving advice about things they actually know about.

Out of interest and because I purchased a Webley & Scott Bolt action .410 yesterday :)

What sort of range do you think I could realistically shoot rabbits using fourlong #5 ?

This is my second .410, the first I think I put 5 cartridges through and never used it but have always regretted not really testing it in the field (hence my exploits now). I've under slung a lamp on the barrel and have a few Fourlong left from my last .410 and plan a lamping trip. I have a stack of 1940's 2" Eley paper case .410 cartridges here as well, are 2" any good for the rabbits? If so, again whats a practical range?

Thanks

John

I wouldnt use 2" on rabbits unless your really close, they are more a ratting cartridge. they hold about 9 grams of shot. that not alot for a decent sized rabbit.

Just out of interest, Is there any bigger shot size 410 carts about that are half decent and what's the power like on them at range?

Eley used to do 2 1/2" cartridges in BB and AAA and 3" cartridges in AAA and solid ball!

Shot fired from a 410 has nearly (about 10% less I believe ) the same velocity as the same size shot from a 12 bore . That makes the effective range of the individual pellets pretty similar but because of the small shot charge in a 410 the pattern can pretty gappy once past about 15 yards .

Originally 410s were short range jobbies . The history of the 410 is a bit cloudy but I've read somewhere that the cartridge was originally designed as or adapted from a .45 US cavalry pistol round for small-game and shooting snakes that dared enter ones tent . Possibly it was designed as a circus trick-shooter's round . People like Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakly were rumoured to have loaded their pistols with bird shot. not only was it easier to hit glass balls thrown in the air but the tiny pellets proved less of a hazard to the spectators than a .45 slug ! The 410 shot gun might have come as an afterthought. Hence the 2inch cartridges which are good for about ten yards .

The tighter chokes and heavy 3 inch cartridges can nearly double the effective range as long as you can shoot straight but you lose out on short range spread for moving targets. That's the price you pay when you push what is essentially a very short range tool out to limits it was never designed for .

I use my old 410 with 2 inchers for ferreting in brambles . Just stand still ,let the bunny clear the hole and pop it when it squats or starts to creep away .

interesting write up comanche

Thanks . As said, the evolution of the 410 does seem to raise chicken and egg issues . The fact that the 410 is named for its cartridge size (rather than its bore size like other shot-guns) indicates that the cartridge possibly came first . .Certainly by the turn of the 20th Century it was turning up in a variety of guns from re-bored rook rifles to neat little travel guns used by explorers and naturalists .

I won't be at all offended if someone says I'm wrong and comes up with other theories . Er I'd best stop now anyway . I seem to be way off the original question about sub sonic ammo in hush-power Sorry :icon_redface:
