German sheperd as a gundog

Recommended Posts

My decision is unchanged i will be getting a German Shepherd next year and training it to be a gundog. I really can't see any problem training one to do the required job although some would then they best stick with whats proven :notworthy:

The main role would be retrieving duck and geese. I'm not pretending i'm going to be using it alongside other shooters on an expensive day out.

I rough shoot and i really have no need for a dog at it, and the pigeons well the shepherd can retrieve them too..

And when i'm not out shooting i will have a good strong dog that is more on my level and a pleasure to live with. Take that how you will.

Hi. Just wondering how you got on. Did you get the GSD and train it? I have a 14 month old. Excellent obedience and budding protection dog. I am now strongly inclinced to train it for retrieving and general gun dog dutied... Would love to hear if you have any feedback on using a GSD.

cheers Ian

Hi,

I have several Gsd's and have competed with them in trial's which involve obedience, agility and protection work. It is as, already mentioned by your self and others important to get one from "good lines" I personnaly would check the Hip scores of the parents (19) is average so aim for a score lower. This doesnt guarentee good hips in the pup but will increase the chances. One of mine does a 9' scale (wall jump)and is extremely agile and will retreive anything:keys, peg, fish slice, 2" piece of carpet, wallet -empty :-( etc..

I wish you luck in your search if I can be of any help feel free to ask

Regards
