clay pigeon...

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i know this isn't a clay section but i've aquick question for anyone with experience on clays and live quarry - i've been shooting for years but always on live stuff, never on clays. however at this years CLA i'm gonna have pop at few clays so was just wondering if there is anything to bear in mind (other than not to try cook these 'pigeons' in a pie afterwards!) what sort of choke arrangements work best etc.. thanks.

hi ben i try and get a clay shooting section added in here, but for now i see can i answer your question i shoot both and there is a big drifference from game to clay, mainly speed more lead maybe needed !!!!now i say maybe, as it up to you to judge the speed, as for choke  this is where a lot of shooter differ, some just stay with 1/4 and 1/2 for sporting , for dtl [down the line] it's 3/4 and full,1/4 and half should be ok for most if not all sporting clays, the best thing is to give it ago and see how you get on mate best of luck

You should be ok because you are rough shooter you will be able to get the swing right, have a go its great fun, I go to my local clay shoot which has a very relaxed atmosphere, great practice, and i wouldnt mind betting you have the speed to pick out the clays, faster than some..as for chokes well mine are fixed..so I couldnt comment.

GO FOR IT, YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME, just dont expect miracles, just enjoy it. then if its for you get a little help n pointers.

what i would suggest pal is leave the chokes in what you go rough shooting with dont alter them and play about stick with the ones you have hit stuff with. you may want to change your cartriges though to 7s or 7 and 1/2 they will just give you a bit more spread on some of the quicker clays.

and one bit of advice i will give you is dont feel under preasure when your shooting by some of the other guns with all the fancy bollocks they walk around with it makes no difference to shooting its just bling, just chill out and relax and just picture every clay with a set of tail feathers lol

good luck matey and have a good 1.atb

p.s. make sure you post and let us know how you get on.

Your Beretta is bling enough :D

Chokes are all well and good for different situations and there is no happy medium but if you are a rough shooter, the chokes you will have been using will be more than enough for clays. As with most people, if they miss, they get pre-occupied with chokes and start fiddling with them, changing them for every stand, this does not contribute to good shooting!

George Digweed, I think he's been World Sporting Champion 14 times now, shoots Full and Extra Full for everything through a Fixed choke Perazzi, he sticks to it, learnt to shoot it, and sticks to the same shell ;)

Go along and enjoy yourself

cheers for all the feedback guys, think i'll just leave choke as is and see how i get on. will let you know! anyone else going to CLA?

think i am but im not shooting there. i hate the clay setups, the refs dont know what they are doing and half the traps brake down. if i were you i would stick to the local clay club, as long as it is reliable.

sounder, why use 3/4 and full for DTL? i can shoot it with my skeet chokes and i dont know any one who uses more than 3/4 and that is for their second barrel. i also know a lot of people who shoot the other trap diciplines; OT, UT, DT, DR and so on, but i dont know anyone who uses more than 3/4 in their seoncd barrle there and most of those targets and faster and further away than DTL. its just making life harder for yourself as you have a smaller patern. when i shoot DTL i normal shoot 1/4 and 1/2.

most trap guns are full and full or half and full fixed chokes ??? again it down to what you want , tight chokes are better for dtl i think as bird can be flat you only shooting the edge of a clay so tight chokes is needed, in sporting if i am shooting say a crosser ever at 30 to 40 yards i use a half if the clay is on edge as with say 1/4 the patteren can be open and the clay can be missed even if you bang on as there can be gaps in the pellets/patteren , not say you wrong but at big comp win or loseing is down to makeing ever bird count !!!

especial in dtl, if you dont shoot 100 then ur out! some FITASC layouts that i know of set their targets with 1/4 choke, if it cant be hit within 6 chots with 1/4 choke then they change it untill it can be broken with 1/4 choke, and some FITASC birds are a very long way off. you can sort out holes in your pattern by having the gun regualed to the cartridges that you use ;).

no not that i know of, some cartridges have a tight patteren, you regulate your patteren with chokes the tighter you go with the less gaps you get ,but at the end of the day what i do is is i read the birds the more face of the bird the more i open up unless it's way out 60 yrds plus
