  1. Friday evening last, i was invited to try for a muntie buck on a patch a mate has ,a patch incidentally that has produced no fewer than 7 gold muntie heads .We arrived to find the farm hands mowing silage fields on the lower ground but our destination was the slopes that surround this place, slopes that scream mutjac from all corners .Areas of trees and thick hedges interspersed with the obligatory bramble patches so beloved by this little deer and all on chalk downland .We could glass the slopes from the farm but my host said we needed to get a move on as it was now 8pm already .The tactic her
  2. In all honesty the first word out my mouth this morning was "bollocks" Half past bloody three in the morning, an earful off the wife for waking her up and now this - a cold and blustery wind driving the sort of drizzle which gets you soaked and fogs your optics up. Perfect contitions for a cold, wet walk. Fortunatly my mood and the weather improved on the way to Foxdroppers in Wiltshire - the land of milk and honey I told him what the weather was like in Somerset 40 minutes @ 90 mph away and he said it'll be here in a hour so there was cut the foreplay and get on with it. We made out w
  3. Local off the site came up for a stalk and met him on the motorway roundabout at 6.30 pm .Off to the ground and got there at 7pm .Sun was shining but a wind had got a bit which i knew would affect the deer a bit .Four big fields is all i have here but its a good bit of ground to have for the deer .A pond is at the centre and its where i shot the first buck of the season .We set off on a boundary stalk to check if anything was out yet but nothing .The second time round we stalked slower as the magical hour was upon us .Sure enough a buck was moving down a hedge from right to left infront of us
  4. Cold easterlies has killed sport, but we managed an old blind in 1 eye warrior, who also had alibarbas slipper. Taken clean with a lung shot and .308 And a barren vixen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB76CiVgMxM
  5. .............saw me at a place where i do the foxing to protect free range chickens .Ive been here quite a bit recenty trying to outfox charlie thats nipping in to take a few chickens in daylight .Cubs nearby so they will be dealt with in due course.I also have the stalking here and ive been seeing a buck in the top field whilst sat for a fox on a few occasions now .I tried to put Martin on him a while back but the weather turned cold and windy that evening and he never played ball .Well this evening in question ,he was out again in the long mowing grass and i decided to try for him .The wind
  6. Met up with my good mate FD for a look about yesterday evening after throwing together a last minute trip out. Weather looked like it could go either way but if you don't go you don't know and all that. Got to the location around 7.30 and promptly kitted up and set off. Its a great spot mainly laid to mixed grazing and criss crossed with thick hedges which leans down to a fenced plantation alongside a train-track. As has been discussed before on the forum - the policy of having 7ft deer fences is great but totally bloody pointless next to a train track where the track side has to be left open
  7. Well as the day was cancelled I shot a fox this morning and stalked a 5 pointer only to leave it hopefully for my client tomorrow morning. Tonight after doing a dsc2 stalk (on paper from one shot earlier this week) i was ready to get out again. I had a deer carcass to deliver to one of my permissions to the farmer for 1 of his friends. We had put up a seat there last month so I would go sit in it for a fox or something (I had decided to shoot any buck which appeared tonight or I may never get 1). I was up it for about 7.30 and Breeze sat still below me. The 6.5 was loaded with the 156gr r
  8. I had a client here this week who shot a few bucks. I only captured a little on video. He asked I wouldn't show his progress so I will honour his decision.(which is why i've not been posting).(that and the long hours). But on the video I did take I had a very different camera angle from the shooter so captured some rare footage. This is the strike. These are the best stills seconds after the strike.
  9. This was actually way back on the day of the royal wedding but haven't had web access until now. My good wife had one of her friends down with her two children, one of which was a lad who's dad (a good mate who was sadly couldn't make it) I had initiated to shooting last year with the aid of the rimfire and a few obliging rabbits and hares. The pomp and ceremony on the telly was wearing a little thin so I mentined popping out later to look for a buck and a few rabbits to which his face lit up... so much so the two women couldn't possibly say no After swathering him in massively oversized
  10. Went to my furthest permission yesterday evening and well worth it too .Had a walk around part of the 7000 acres here and never saw a deer or a sign of one so a bit concerned but a talk to the farmers son on a tractor put my mind at rest .This side of the farm had been sprayed two days ago and hed not seen a deer there either but assured me there were plenty on the other side the track around the dairy end .The time was getting on now so i decided to get to a spot where the deer show mainly last light and sat in the opposite hedge.Darkness seems to come on all too fast when watching for moveme
  11. i was stalking yesterday eve and i saw a young buck in full velvet (5 pointer)just wondering how i prepare it for a wall mount im boiling the head now so its just the velvet that im wondering about cheers
  12. I had a bell from Foxdropper(my mate)this afternnoon asking if I wanted to pop up his for a stalk, but,as times are a bit tight I decided to ask him down here to save me some diesel, and we met at about 1830hrs.I thought we might go to a farm that I haven't been to for a little while now to see what was about, and it is only local too.We pulled into the field of very long mowing grass(3 feet long)and dropper started off along the top of the field, which normally might be the thing to do,but,I had a feeling that if there was something here it would be in one of the lower fields so we dropped down o
  13. Local came up again for a further lesson in this fine art ,lol.Took him to a place where a farmer is moaning about deer trapped in a field he has electric fenced ready for cattle and hes worried about them damaging themselves and undoing his hard work so i said id take a look .This is also an intensive organic chicken farm if thats the right combination of words to use so fox control is of utmost importance .We glassed the area from the truck and were more than surprised to see two young bucks out together following each other in the lush ,long grass and at the far end of this meadow .We plan
  14. friday morning. This morning. A nice trip to yorkshire.
  15. I popped up the valley this evening as there was a decent Buck around the other evening when I took Foxdropper up there, and I thought I might be able to get onto him with a bit of luck.It was a very hot day today, and as it cooled down a bit I thought he might be amongst the scrubby ground at the bottom of the valley,I walked up slowly using the brambles to keep me shielded, and guess what.....there he was.A total of 3 minutes stalking and I already had a bead on him, but,I decided to watch him for a while before taking the shot,he was casually browsing his way up a small banking approximately 65
  16. Well had a stalk earlier got myself a nice roe for the bbq forgot how much bucks get me heart pumping
  17. Travelled down to deepest Somerset for a chance to stalk in some very picturesque landscape ,the permission of local off the site .Ive been here before so knew the general layout but not having shot a buck here yet ,this evening was one to remember .We started on the higher ground from where a perfect view of the lower fields can be had .Saw nothing on the higher ground but Local ,having the knowledge of the place ,spotted a buck and doe feeding along a hedge in one of the many patchwork fields below us and a plan was made to get in a bit closer .This involved backtracking to the farm and comi
  18. Up at 5 am for the drive to one of my furthest spots .Heavy morning mist meant a cloaked arrival at my chosen spot for a sit .The farmer here has been on to me about the deer even though i shoot on sight in season here it seems there is a ready supply next door to fill the slightest void created by me but im not complaining ,who would .Sat under a tree in the mist and watched the sun come up and the first efforts for it to burn the mist away .Pheasants landed noisely somewhere in the field and a trio of hares passed by very close ,close enough for me to see the eyes clearly . An hour passed
  19. Finished work earlier than expected on Monday so popped over to a farm to zero my .223 which has recently had some work done on it. The farmer had made a passing comment about the number of deer he'd seen recently, one of which appeared in difficulty, so I took the 6.5x55 with me as well together with ammo for both guns, targets, bino's, sticks and a length of tarp to lie on so I was pretty loaded up. I noticed the kidney shaped ass of a roe buck on the other side of the hedge as I approached my zeroing patch so slowed up to get a closer look. He turned out to be a nice 6 pointer with a doe in
  20. Last Tuesday evening saw me at a spot ive had for fox control around organic chicken sheds and the farmer by way of thanks, has asked me to cull a few deer as the numbers are well up due to the cropping this year and the amount of rape grown next door .Four big fields surrounded by thick hedges and a pond in the middle ,perfect.Walked around the first field right handed to get the wind right and crossed the ditch into a big field where i knew the deer would be.Couldnt see anything from the first glass but as the corn is now a bit long i didnt expect to straight away .Moving up the hedge i gl
  21. well I went out for the start of roebuck season, I dont normally get a chance to go this early. I saw a nice buck last night just that little too far I couldnt get on to him, he was in the middle of a large field. I waited all evening hoping he would walk in to mebut he didnt. so this morning I set off in a different place where I had seen a buck a few weeks ago. when I was at the does, I had only been stalking about 15 min when I came across the buck coming through wood, about 70 yrds, so I checked through the bins and straight away could see he was a good un, so up on the sticks with the 300
  22. Hi Ive recently been recomended to a client who has asked me to control roe deer and he requires me to invoice him for the work but Im not sure what the going rate is,would you bill per visit/per beast/or per year. In the past I have just kept the carcass and this is the first time I have been asked to bill for my services but with rising fuel and ammunition prices etc this may be an oppertunity to cover some expenses although I have been stalking for 15+ years I may also have to fork out for my DCS1+2. I have walked the ground and there is visual signs of deer dammage grazing at shoul

  24. Hey Would like to share my pictures of my first ever roe buck!! I will never forget it!! one of the best days of my life! wanted to do this for years!
  25. A free day Friday so decided to have a look out first light .The daughters boyfriend who works for me ,has been on to me about shooting a deer for sometime now and having shot paper with me i knew he was ready for the real thing albeit under full instruction. He has always been into airguns and now has a shotgun with quarry respect top of conversations. He arrived 15 minutes early on his scooter so a cup of tea was in order before the off .Drove to a spot just out of town to where there is a few deer and where the landowner has asked for a beast for the table, arrived at 6.15 am to a perfec
