  1. How on earth do I decide on what dog to go for? I love my shooting/beating and am in the position later this year to get my first gundog. Initially i loved flatcoat retrievers (worked with a breeder of them for many years) but since being out beating Ive got a soft spot for cockers, and think they would maybe be a better breed for me to work as i enjoy the beating side more, but said dog could be trained to pick up? so what breeds would you reccomend? I like that many (not even listed those) Im struggling to make my mind up!!
  2. there are all gundog breeds that *can* be hard in the mouth, GWP arent known for it, and not every single one is. its all about training. very nice dogs if you do decide to get one, i prefer the slovakian rough haired pointer, or the GSP but GWP are very nice dogs, and are on my list to own!
  3. I (fingers crossed) gettingm my first gundog later on in the year. I would like the dog to be kennelled when I am not at home. He wont be kennelled at night, but will be after walks when wet and muddy, and when I am out at work all day. I have a kennel and run being built at the minute, it will have a 4ft by 4ft bedding aread and a 6ft by 4ft run. I want to know when do I start getting the pup used to being in a kennel and run, how do i start training him so he likes being in the kennel, and most importantly learns to be quiet in there?
  4. Thanks for that! Really interesting. Ive bought a book on growing veg in containers as well as one saying what to plant when. Looking forward to it!
  5. A dog is a dog. Raw feeding wont alter its work. Obviously i wouldnt go feeding whole pheasant partridge etc with feathers on if you still want the dog to pick up. My lurcher is on raw, eats rabbit regularly but doesnt mangle them after shes caught them.
  6. Nice pups! Will be intrigued to see how they turn out.
  7. Im debating mating my bitch this year but unsure at the minute, as i would only breed to keep one and im thinking of grtting a gundog as im doing alot more shooting/beating Shes saluki x bull greyhound, met some nice dogs if i decide to.
  8. Cracking looking dog there! I cant decide between one of these for my girl when shes out working or a nice leather one!
  9. Im going to give growing veg a go this year. I can only really grow in pots though, i dont have any grass i could turn into a patch! I have ordered some books, but any ideas what i can start planting now? I know about onions but looking on a website they are saying cauliflower and leeks as well?
  10. Wish I could get a good deal like that! Mind you I haven't been to my butchers yet! I pay £6 for 5kg of carcass from my raw food supplier.
  11. Mine gets rabbit now and again when I have more than enough spare after ive had mine! She gets them whole but skinned.
  12. Is there any reason why my lurcher hasnt had a season. She has just turned 3. I have read on a greyhound forum that it could be to do with back allignment? Any one else had this trouble at all? What can I do about it?
  13. I have a saluki x bull greyhound. Shes mainly saluki though. Shes a cracking dog, will run on anything. She has taken a while to get going but thats because I didnt have her from a pup and she hadnt had any training. She is strong, but very sensitive and you do have to be careful with the tone of voice. It does have its advantages though as she knows when I mean business! Maturity wise my girl is 3 now and id say she has just matured mentally and really settled down. Absolutely love her to pieces.

  15. I have a saluki x bull greyound but she is mainly saluki, certainly cant see the bull in her!! shes used to lamp rabbits. its her first season on rabbits and out lamping this time, despite her just turned 3. She's turning into a cracking dog. picked up quick onto following the lamp. she is getting really good and i couldnt be happier with her. the first couple of times out she didnt catch, but was striking out, and she just needed to tighten her turns etc. shes getting there, and for my first lurcher she is doing me proud!
  16. i use a small flat leather collar with a piece of strapping (cant think what to call it!) i tighten the loop around my wrist and slip the other under the collar and hold it in my hand. That way when i slip i just let go of the bit in my hand, it slides out from under the collar and the lead stays attached to my wrist.
  17. Can someone write a list of what books there are? Im fairly new to the lurcher and coursing world and am on the look out for some things for me to read!
  18. ahh that makes more sense!! dont think we have anything in our pack at the minute!
  19. cracking pups! theyre going to be stunning! my girl is saluki x greyhound, would love a pure saluki one day!
  20. Anyone got one on here? I love the breed and used to work for a lady who owned 6. Mainly showed, but did a bit of gundog trials with them too. Think theyre a cracking breed and when Im in the market for a gundog this is what i shall have!!
  21. I like a good horror film. Prefer the older ones as new horror films have gone rather rubbish!! love amityville horror.. although i did watch insidious and the 2nd one too did scare me a little!!!
  22. Unfortunately alot of pet owning people treat their dogs like kids and have no idea on canine behaviour. I used to show a toy breed that people assumed was babied and kept like a handbag dog! i never let that happen to him. and little did they know he is a good little tracker/retriever/rabbiter on the side!
  23. When you say you're short of experience what is it exactly that you need to know?
