  1. I use a .30-30 with a good 4x scope mounted, with Winchester Silvertips or my own loads, in and around woodland it's very effective on my quarry. A good short range rifle, I do a bit of target shooting with it, with the right cast lead bullet it can, if you know what you're doing, be loaded down to almost subsonic velocity. Compared with the straight walled pistol calibre's it's not a beginners round IMO.
  2. The new Eley Edge with the black brass is receiving excelent reports from target shooters, It's subsonic and supplied in handy black plastic slider boxes. It works very well in my semi-auto.
  3. Just the job, set the trend and fit a Holo sight
  4. An old post but; I shoot a lot of .44-40s in original Winchesters, I'm afraid I've always reloaded., I used to shoot a Colt SA. Should anyone be interested, an excellent gallery load is 5.6 grains Red Dot, works well in the .44 Mag also. WARNING; Only use with standard weight LEAD bullets as these loads are minimum, also use minimum crimp and pistol primers. Check your load weights.
  5. I only use subs in my Anschutz and Sako, my preference is Eley HP Subs followed by Lapua. I have a little Marlin TDS Carbine, it's short micro-grooved barrel shoots CCI CB Shorts and Longs at 30 foot pounds very well upto 30 yards or so, they don't shoot well from my other rifles. I've also found that the new Eley Edge sub solids are excellent for head shooting rabbits.excelent in my Volquartsen barrelled semi-auto which has a tight chamber. As for HV .22, I have some RWS in my Ammo cabinet, I will give them a try sometime, I value the quietness of subs in my rimmies.
  6. I have three Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 mildot (not HDs) fitted to rimfires and FAC air. I have scopes by the big names but the brightness, sharpness and field of view of the Bushnell is very good indeed. I bought them mint used for around £125 each and fitted them in BKL mounts; I fit Accucovers to them and find them an excellent aid to minimising parallax error and speeding up target acquisition in low light; covers fold flat to the top of the eyebell.
  7. Good tip Andyf, another useful product is Copperslip. Good shooting. Brian
  8. A superb rifle, I'm very pleased to have bought it. Thanks mate.
  9. Loves2hunt, having bought the rifle I'm delighted with it, also your accurate description of condition etc. it's a dream to shoot, I love the balance and the weight of eight and a half pounds with a light scope. Thanks also for the pellets! Good shooting mate.
  10. Rabbit Sniper, I have recently bought one of these rifles in .22 FAC, variable power 8 to 48 FPE with BisMags. It has an alloy cylinder and shroud and weighs about eight and a half pounds with scope in its Sporter stock. With its 24" barrel it seems to be very flat shooting. I have other Ripley's and cartridge rifles. The AR5s is superb in all respects. Does yours have the alloy or steel cylinder/shroud.? The stock is superb, good luck with the sale!
  11. I've used an RCBS 5-0-5 magnetically damped balance scale for twenty years, perfect. It's the scale to judge all others by, made by Ohaus in the US. I don't like using and don't trust digital scales. HTH
  12. I reload a very wide range of calibre's and generally use RCBS lube which I apply sparingly and sometimes with my finges according to the work. do find it good practice as has been mentioned, to clean the inside neck of cases, in addition, in some situations I apply a little dry lube such as moly powder or graphite to the inside of the case neck and/or the expander button. This reduces the friction of the expander plug in some instances and also reduces the pressure on the case neck when seating. I don't find that it affects bullet pull. I'm aware that this method probably won't interest mo
  13. Hi if you are interested in getting an FAC granted for shooting over land first you need to obtain written permission from the land owner/ tennent who has what you believe is suitable land for the calibre(s) you are interested in. You should enquire of them to find out if the land has been cleared for rifle shooting and if so, what calibre's The next step is to install suitable a security cabinet for the safekeeping of the firearms involved. You can then download and print out Firearms Form 101 along with the Application for an SGC and digest the content; the next step is to visit the BASC w
