I was out the other day with Tim to go lamping on some farmland where foxes were still causing problems with some late lambs. Had an hour or so daylight available when he arrived so I dropped him off at a spot of mine he been to several times before and I went somewhere where sadly I can’t take guests. Unfortunately for Tim shortly after I left a walkers dog coursed a deer right out in front of him and then the only house in the area decide to hide a noisy bbq. He managed a fox and in the circumstances was lucky to get that! I had a bit more luck and had only gone 100m up the estate drive

Cheers guys - it’s on a private estate and noise isn’t a massive issue so I might just start with the 3” supers and maybe get a couple box’s of 2.5” to try as a few dB could be useful in some other places. Mostly I don’t want to push the deer about at this place while I’m doing it as the idea it to smash a few squirrels and then have a stalk after. -
I’ve got one of these coming for some squirrel control I need to do. What is the sound difference between the 2.5” and 3” cartridges? I can’t source any 3” subsonic cartridges one that are apparently made for the job but don’t want to buy a slab of shite. Any advice from those in the know would be appreciated. Picking it up on Tuesday.

I’m more about making a good impression this season so will do exactly what I told the estate manager which is get the numbers down but leave the best to hold territory. As I’m sure you know age doesn’t always equate to a decent heads either.

Apparently only two big bucks were taken last year and no does at all until I showed up so while I can understand if he’s pissed off it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. All joking aside Tim your mentoring and guidance helped immeasurably, even when I had no ground of my own to return the favour with.

There’s that many about it’s hard to say Rich. It’s been stalked in the past although they seem to have moved on or largely stopped visiting. I only found out after I took on the place that a fella I know has permission here as well but despite best efforts I’ve yet to catch up with him about it and it’s starting to get awkward!

It beggars belief Rich. There are some brutes in there, certainly appear bigger than the gold medal I’ve got in my shed. Looking forward to seeing them clean of velvet although the Forrester would rather it wasn’t at the expense of his trees!

Made a start on the April bucks yesterday after work. The woods are looking great at the moment, leafless trees but lots of floor level greenery, electric green in places from the carpets of wild garlic and bluebells so the deer are far easier the spot than they were even a few weeks ago. Im planning to leave the big bucks here but some of the ones I’ve seen are so big they make normal representative heads look pathetic, so much so the cull plan is has to include what might normally be left to try and get the numbers down. Hi Phil - yes it does work at shorter ranges if you scale down the power output using the dial on the unit. If you had it full whack youd need to apply a bit of factor 50 on you face first of all as you get enough glare to blind you not to mention light you up!

I’ve got a Nitesite Wolf and 300m is an huge overstatement bordering on a bare faced lie. How they are able to claim that I just don’t know. Clear as day out to 100 but I’d put 150 as its threshold. Ok you might be able to spot an eye further on than that but we all know better than to shoot first and identify later.

I hope they do Rich. It turns out there’s another stalker with permission there but has only been a couple of times and only taken big bucks. They haven’t seen him at all over the doe season so got me in for some more active management to get the numbers down. I’m still trying to get in touch with him to work it all out. Id like a dog redneck but have too much on my plate at the minute... maybe next year!

Weather forecast is looking choppy again so gave my new place one more visit to show willing. I’ve got designated times when I can shoot but have a quick drive round the estate beforehand just to be on the safe side in case staff are still on site. I saw a few cull bucks about on the place, some of which were clean, and also this fella who seemed happy to watch me as a drive past. Saturday dawn was Baltic cold but looked to be best of the weekend. Managed to tag a roe doe as she emerged from some nice thick rhododendrons. That’s four in four trips here but the woodland stalking takes some getting used to, it’s all pretty close stuff and I’m not getting many chances to get a second shot away before they disappear into cover. Passing the owners chicken coup on the way to the gralloch site I disturbed a fox who ran up a the side of a steep quarry. The cover was really thick and I only just managed to track him in the bins. This is a 6.5x55. I like the caliber but leave it made up on the safe. The take-down feature wasn’t the selling point as I was sceptical about it retaining zero but it does just that and sweet Jesus is it sweet to shoot.
