  1. Snap mate, I still have some of his letters. photos etc and copies of articles he sent me, I lost touch just over 12 months ago, my fault.
  2. A true lurcherman of the old school, proud to call him a friend, swapped many a letter and photo with Sammy, RIP to a real gent.
  3. Try teaching the lurcher to hold on command, when doing your dummy training, let it stand with you holding the dummy, do retrieves and use hold when coming in, teach it this by placing the dummy in its mouth and gently closing its mouth saying hold, then when it understands start using it with rabbits, saying hold, the penny usually drops and they start retrieving to hand.
  4. I have had lurchers for over 30 years and live in an area where whippets are very popular, I have a whippet just on 12 months, I didnt want any more lurchers, as I am easing up on the rabbiting, I just wanted a little dog to mooch about locally and get me out, we have whippet racing twice a week and shows if you want to show, non pedigree whippets go for around £150 with KC about £200-£300, to me thats not bad for the fun you get. My pup has had 3/4 rabbits and is learning to hunt and ratch cover off my old lurcher bitch but many here are used to lamp and ferret. That said some will ask £500 f
  5. Many pups lugs are all over the place and then when the big teeth have cut they settle down differs with breeds and maturity.

  8. Never trained anyone elses dog for similar reasons already stated but been with young lads day and night, I have given them assistance it a variety of tasks etc, lamp training with dummys, jumping, recall all the usual things that can be a problem, those that want to learn will and can always ask, those that dont and have had the dogs 5 minutes and know everything about nothing I struggle to tolerate. Maybe Im just getting a grumpy old git.
  9. Sorry to read the sad news mate, only just seen it, havent been on this section for a while, RIP Maggie,
  10. 20-21 inch I think mate, tall and racy
  11. Quite racy built really, bred locally in Cumbria, hot bed for whippets this area.
  12. The National Lurcher and Racing Club were a bigger club than all the others put together but they were not the lurcher representatives, size doesnt matter (well it does sometimes haha) all clubs and individuals had one representative, same with other bodys.
  13. There are loads of clubs out there already, many regional ones as like the NWTF have, they need an organisation to pull them all in together, and all the lone hunters who arent attached to clubs, all lurcher/longdog owners should be able to join the organisation, Im not talking of two dozen members of HL or 3-4 clubs associated to the ALC, they need to mobile all clubs and owners into one.
  14. I agree with most of what Skycat is saying, I posted my thoughts in earlier pages, whilst its good to let people know what is happening it has gone far past that, the slanging match between two organisations is doing the cause more harm than good, the old guard ALC have a lot to offer, the new LAGBI are keen and enthusiastic, the whole of this post needs deleted from HL, all that has been said need wiped clear and start again with a clean slate, they need to sit down and talk in a proper scheduled and minuted meeting. Someone asked why the ALC are the recognised organisation for Lurchers/L
  15. Business Cards, Smart Dress and Explain your services to the farmer, no answer leave a card
  16. I think it depends on the terrain you work and the amount of rabbits on that land, you can only catch whats in front of you, going back 25-30 years ago we would come back from Scotland with regular big bags 75-150 rabbits, we needed a dog with stamina and that could take a knock, we had a mixture of lurcher x lurchers and some sheepdog cur crosses, they did a days ferreting then back out on the lamp once dark. Later years the rabbit population has dwindled, lucky to get 20-25 on the lamp, the same bushing and ferreting, have been using a small ACD X Grew for last 7 years, good all round rabbi
  17. would that be the same decorum as that used to re brand and elect a committee without approaching the group that was already looking into starting a group, something that yourselves accused that group of doing without consulting yourselves, speaking for myself. what is the point in re instating a group that has consisted of one man for over 20 years that very few of the new generation of dog lads have ever even herd of, who you say has done so much for the last 20 years that we find our self still under represented and look upon as the dark sheep of the hunting world. where was this when the m

  19. Thanks for your thoughts Mushroom, its not about gratitude mate, I just dont like the thought of some of the members pointing the stick at the former Lurcher organisations for their lack of effort and work during what was a testing and difficult time for Lurchers, they did a fantastic amount of work in turbulent times, after 30 years of running shows, clubs etc its time for others to take over, the man to help steer the group if he is willing is the man who has been there done that and is respected for all his work, Alan Tyer.
  20. I would like to add a bit of history to the debate, after reading comments by the younger members about why wasnt it done years ago, it was, and I have been through all this ground prior to the Hunting Act, from about 1996 up until the Act 2004, the older senior people were involved and did achieve what this group are trying to resurrect then it was done through the National Lurcher and Racing Club and The Association of Lurcher Clubs, The ALC was the Lurcher Organisation the Countryside Alliance recognised as the main representative of Lurchers with them and the Council of Hunting.
