  2. Having used Eley subs for a long time with no probs, I had to buy some CCI's recently. The fifth round out of the box definately had a hot load in it, I was target shooting at 60yds, the previous four rounds had hit point of aim, the fifth went supersonic and hit 3ins high. Has anyone else had this problem with CCI's before?
  3. excuse my ignorants but is a rabbit shot at 250 yards going to be bits or is it usable the only reason i ask is there are times when i might want to shoot a few rabbits for the pot. Also how would you describe the sound that is left from your moderated 223 as opposed to an unmoderated one on a scale of one to ten. ten being the loudest sound coming from the unmoderated rifle. Thanks and sorry if it is a bit confusing It's hard to describe the difference between a moderated and un-moderated .223, but I'll try. Without a mod on your ears will ring for a while (not to mention the potentia
  4. Here's my CZ527 varmint .223 wearing a T8 mod and Leupold 8.5-25 x 50 on fox patrol. No foxes shot on this particular outing but I did get a rabbit at 250yds which I used as fox bait. (unfortunately the fox ate the bait when I went to get my horses in!) BUT.... the next night I went out with the .17hmr and got two of the blighters from about 20yds.
  5. When it comes to approaching landowners, prepare to be surprised; sometimes even the most dour, grizzled old farmer may say yes. So approach everyone, the worst they can do is say no and set their Rottweiler on you. Oh, and a bottle of whisky as a thank you always goes down well. Good luck with the land permissions, it may take a while but don't give up. Merry Christmas.
  6. I have a Leupold VX-III 8.5-25 x 50 (about £650.00) which I am really pleased with. It has a very clear and bright image at 25x mag. I've used it on targets at 600yds on a .223. It has 1/4 MOA turrets which I keep zeroed at 100yds. If I go fox shooting I go up 4 clicks which puts me 1" high which covers a 2" vital zone out to 200yds or if I go target shooting I go up 70 clicks which normally gets me to within 4" of the V-bull at 600yds with my first shot. At the end of the day I dial back to my 100yd zero and I know that whether I go foxing or target shooting next, the scope will always put t
  7. I did exactly that, my wife thought we were buying 4 acres for her horse, but I knew different; it is a great 300yd range (unless the horse gets in the way). I filled in my own permission form for .22lr, .17hmr & .223 and gave it to the FEO when he came to do my home visit. I also supplied a photocopied map of the land for his files, which he seemed to appreciate.
  8. Put it on a separate line,i.e .22lr - Rifle .22lr - sound moderator I never put down a reason on my applications; but I recently submitted a variation for a .308 rifle and moderator for target shooting but was denied the moderator even though I tried to argue that it reduced recoil and therefore made the weapon more accurate. Their reply was that mods are not issued for target shooting but if I get my DSC 1 and land permissions I could have one (another £26.00!)
  9. One year after having my FAC granted I asked for it to be made open as I was doing a lot of winter work tree planting on vast estates with rabbit problems. The reply was NO, they don't make certificates open until the first renewal (5 years)! So I asked him to check all the estates I was working on and he said that if the owner or gamekeeper knew that the land was already cleared for my calibre then there was no need for a police check and I could go ahead and shoot, as long as I had the landowners permission. Last winter one of my clients asked me to sort out a fox which had taken some of
  10. My ticket states: .22lr - vermin & zeroing .17hmr - fox & vermin & zeroing .223 - fox & zeroing
  11. Perhaps this will open the debate about whether the BASC should have promoted their DSC 1 course so strongly that many police forces now feel that it should be mandatory for all potential stalkers!
  12. At last, a sensible, coherent and reasoned reply to what is a very contentious issue. I am definitely a fence sitter, my mind is wide open to both sides of the argument. If DEFRA comes up with uncontrovertible evidence that badgers are responsible for bovine TB and allows a cull, I will do my bit for my local farming comunity; (they also make a mess of my paddocks and I have to fill in the holes to stop my horses breaking their legs).
  13. If your FAO is anything like mine you will need to do a DSC Level 1 course (about £300.00 through the BASC or BDS) then you will have to have at least one 'permission' to shoot deer on suitable land even if you just want to do paid stalking days in Scotland. My FAO has never mentioned going the mentoring route (hope he doesn't read this and get any more ideas). I am planning on doing the course in April with the BDS in Devon; I have a free slot for a .308 on my ticket, but for target shooting only at the moment but it will be converted to deer on completion of the course and proof of permissi
  14. F*** ME. You could buy a second hand rifle for that price.
  15. Fully agree, I've also got the CZ 527 .223 varmint laminated, one evening with a screwdriver and the trigger is spot on. Very easy to do, the instructions supplied were really easy to follow. Groups at 200 yds with homeload 40 grain Silver Tips are pretty impressive. Next thing to do is order a trigger kit for my CZ 452.
