  1. Took some pics of my dogs, rather than write it out again I posted on my blog on this site http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...;blogid=10& Let me know what you think!
  2. Unfortunately currently the only floor space I can permanently allocate for the ferrets is just over 2 x 4 feet so a permanent run is out of the question. I would consider buying a foldaway run for the ferrets such as the following http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=360055996515 to use on the patio if they somehow managed to get ouf the garden. I would let them out atleast once a day whilst I cleaned the hutch.
  3. What do you guys think to this for two ferrets... my available floor space is 2 foot by 4 but I could probably go to around 4 to 5 foot high. Anybody got any better suggestions ( I am no joiner and happy to pay the cash so dont say make your own! ) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...rksid=p3907.m29 Things I like about it are easy to wipe clean with pvc floor floors can be separated to allow cleaning fits in the floor space I have apparently well made may be roomy enough for me to hang the odd thing Things I would change I wish the bottom half was taller
  4. Ok all, thanks for all the replies its given me a lot to think about. As for a little update I have managed to convice the old man to let me have some ferrets and I will be able to keep them in the back garden ( I still cant afford the afforementioned semi in south london im afraid kay ). I have a very sheltered area at the end of the garden (WxLxH) 2 x 4 x however high I want ( but I think 5 foot would be pushing it ). I have inspected the garden and basically there is no way of escape unless they can a) dig through concrete dig through fence panel c) climb fence panels d) jum
  5. Thanks for the advice! There would only be the one dog introduced to the ferrets which is my collie x grey pup who has never seen one before so I would have to take it as it comes. I dont mean to be rude, but what your saying seems to go completely against the grain and very negative. For example, if I try and buy a ferret cage using a simple google search I dont find many cages 6x6x6, infact mostly are a lot smaller than the smallest size I quoted. The small size I quoted was from the national ferret welfare society NFWS Hutch plans and description here.. I am not a child, I can
  6. Im going to word this carefully as it could be misconstrued. I am thinking of keeping ferrets (Initially as pets), and have been reading varying bollocks on the internet. I may be able to have a cage such as this one below I found on this site, depending on how well I can blag my parents but may however be forced to keep them in a smaller cage perhaps even in the garage. There are two lurchers in my family, one of which I spend many hours a day out walking and then a few more training (pup) ... the other tends to get walked by someone else as he only wants to walk 15 yards and th
  7. I found the following on a website (http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/Articles/Stan_recall.htm) and it has also helped in my thinking! Im just looking for a nice long lunge now! "Rectifying Recall Problems If you are already having recall problems then you need to go back to basics - you will need to initially practice the sit stay command at home. To set this well the dog should be on a lead, preferably 5 foot long with a Jingler (see my website for this device). Get the dog to sit with the dog on your left side holding the lead in you left hand. Using the cupped palm of your rig
  8. When you say to put the dog on the line, would you give the dog a quick 'check' (snap the lead) if he were to ignore my calls or just let him get on with it? There are some great ideas being posted, I cant wait to try them all out! I have a retractable lead and Im currently thinking of a mixture of all these techniques. I will also probably get a gun dog or sheepdog book when I get paid!
  9. Yes, I have another dog! How would you vary the difficulty of the recall though as as soon as the dog has seen another he bolts (sometimes he doesnt but 90% of the time he does). Could you explain simply how I would go through this process? I have also been reccomended to use an electric collar and I have access to one of these, but I want to explore all other avenue's first. Thanks again for your help! first off all dont even go down the electric collar route and second of all you start off with the other dog on a lead then do your recall then you really want a dog that your dog

  11. He is a blue mearl 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie he came to the family at 12 weeks and we have had him for about 8 months. Unfortunately I have not been around for most of this but I do spend a lot of time with the dog now I am back and am hoping to be able to work him. My main interest at the moment though is the obedience training as if I was a land owner I would not want an unruly dog running round my land! Thanks for the quick replies!
  12. I have been using the book written by Brian Plummer as my reference for training this pup, and it has proved invaluable. When I call the pup he comes running towards me like he hasnt seen me in a million years so excited and eager to impress. However, this only works when there is nothing more interesting happening (another dog). Of course once the dogs have tired he will come back to me, but this to me is not acceptable! In hancocks book it doesnt actually go into a cure for this other than to say do not chastise the pup as this will be counter-productive. Is this just a fact of li
  13. Some interesting information here mate, http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/6211.html And more to the point, http://www.srdogs.com/Pages/rimadylfr.html
  14. Haha am I opening a can of worms if I ask what is up with hancock!? Minor setback today, my little brother has come home last night from his friends and taken the 'Its my dog' attitude! I am really suprised at this, I assumed he would play with him for an hour tops before being distracted. Fair play to him! So, I spent ALL last night showing him what I have read and helping him with how I think best to go about training him for this week. In the one day my lil bro has spent with the dog, all previous progress has been destroyed. The dog has learnt to completely disregard 'OFF' and h
  15. Thanks for all the posotive replies! Need as much reasurance as I can at the moment because it aint half hard cleaning all that shit up whilst still smiling! But already we are making progress in that department. On another good note Spike is starting to accept Brock into the house and is starting to come downstairs for small periods of time before running off. Ive just noticed blogs in the top corner, so instead of just keep on writing in here ill try and start a new blog! My little brother is also back from his mates and seems like he also wants to help with the training, so atlea
