had my 6 month old collie x now for about a month now really pleased with her so far .im really pleased with her in sitting ,recall ,staying but still she not showing any interest in retrieving tried dummys, skins, balls everything she sometimes rags them about the garden but to bring them nothing just wondered if anyone can give me any ideas on what to do next.

If she picks up and holds the ball, maybe it would be worth trying a longline to help her get the idea?

When did you start retreive training with the dog? Sometimes a dead rabbit or squirrel is useful but you need to work the dog into a frenzy...make it fun!good luck!

try taking out another dog that retrieves to hand. Tie your dog so he cant join in the fun.
make a load off fuss when the other dog retrieves for you plenty of treats etc. Might find your dog will learn from this and not wanting to be left out will start to retrieve. Funny story but i used to have a spaniel that was mad for fetching from water and a terrier bitch that hated getting wet. I took the terrier out for walks when training the spaniel, The terrier sat and watched the spaniel jump off a bank into the river, swim out and retrieve. Watched the fuss he was getting and decided to not be out done. Next time i threw the decoy into the water the terrier jumped in and retrieved to hand. I couldent believe it. Same principle worked for me with another terrier that would not enter the trash.She would just wait outside for the rabbits to bolt. I left her at home for a couple off weeks when working the other dogs. Next time out she joined the party in the hedge, no more trouble with her.

thanks lads for advice will keep at it does my head in but wont give up will try the long line tonight in garden will let you no how i get on

Will he play with balls, teddys or whatever. I don't mean launching it and he goes to get it just put It on a string or roll It around In front of him. As Undi says get the dog real hyped and he'll soon pay interest.

find out what the pup likes picking up it could be a toy sock shoe ball any thing at all thats the first stage then start throwing i when the pup picks it up watch wherever it goes that is the pups safe place go there but DONT take it off the pup just praise it while holding another of the same thing ie the other shoe ect intise it with it and through it the pup will eventually leave the first one and get the second and keep going when pup gets to the end of its concentration span which will problebly noy be long end the session DONT sicken it all the best pal

My male was 2 in june there and hes just decided to retrieve things now big git.Let the pup watch other dogs but keep her tied to a fence or the like when the other dog brings it back big fuss and a treat and eventually she should get the idea due to her x she must be pretty clever so worth a try i have found over the years the other dogs teach the young uns far more than we ever could
