I think the boat has sailed a bit on veg oil too, i used to run my ford ranger on it (25litres oil to 5 litres petrol) i run like that for over 40, 000 miles with no problems but i did full service every 5000 miles. I only used new stuff while it was cheap enough but it's almost as expensive as derv now even from cash and carry etc. I did try filtering old stuff but it is a lot of mess and round here (kent) all the big boys seem to have the waste oil sown up- its hard to get hold of it so i don't bother any more. If you do decide to go for it though i would get on a landrover forum if i were you and find out any potential problems with veg in a freelander as i have no experience with landrovers. Typically, jap motors seem to do the best on veg oil in my experience.
Regards, Luke.

That`s so true about the price of oil. Has gone right up and you don't get many miles to the gallon on oil!!! I used to run a old pug 405 est all day long on it as the pump was a Bosch and i do believe they are the best for waste and clean oil. I didn`t use a heat exchanger never. lol

i beg to differ mate, im on 100% bio diesel, 45mpg,i make it out of used cooking oil,it costs me 15p/litre to make,(68.25p/gal) it works out at £00.01.52p per mile(yes thats right one and a half pence per mile), recently i done a 195mile round trip and it cost me £2.96p. i'd say it was worth it.
my tank holds 50litres so to fill my tank it costs me £7.50 as apossed to £53.95, which is a saving of £46.45 every tank full

biodiesel is a different thing altogether, i got the jist that the original post was referring to running on straight veg oil

yer right mate it was, my mate used to go to asda and buy up to60 litre bottle of new veg oil and just chug it into his pug405 but then it was 37p a litre round here new veg oil is dearer than diesel so theres no advantage now mate, but yer right bio that i make is a different kettle of fish.

no it won't, some engines run better on it. especially those with worn crowns and fuel pumps. the only reason i don't bother anymore is new oil is too expensive so henceforward not worth it. Some people get scared because it bungs your fuel filters up quickly to start with. The reason for this is that the oil is thicker so holds any crap in your tank in suspension for longer. Therefore it is more readily sucked into the fuel lines. If you start running on svo then change your fuel filter every thousand miles and each time cut it open with a hacksaw to see what muck is in there. Once you're cutting them open and they're clean just go back to normal except maybe half the service intervals on your engine oil.
