It's a parasitic wasp of some sort, they lay their eggs on other insects .

cheers for the replys ,had one in front room last night .never seen one before,can they sting or is that what it lays its eggs with :icon_eek:

this one was all black with red legs and very fast on the wing ,totaly shit meself :D was about same size though

Harmless the "sting" is an ovipositor to put eggs into a host.

its a wood wasp we used to get them in the wood yard in bundles of exotic hardwood seemingly they use there tail piece to bore holes in wood to lay there eggs which in turn hatch into larvae which munches on the wood till they pupae and turn into the adults you can hear them drilling its like a drumming noise bloody scarey when ones flying at you :icon_eek: its like a super wasp in a swim suit lol :showoff:
