For anyone interested in dog racing or think there dogs might be. I’d like to introduce you to Westhoughton’s Whippet & Dog Racing Club.
Every alternate Saturday from 5.30pm we race and train our dogs at Westhoughton Greyhound Stadium.
Westhoughton Greyhound Stadium
5 Marsh Brook Fold
Westhoughton, Bolton, BL5 2DH

Google maps http://maps.google.c...o...=16&iwloc=A

Newcomers are welcome to bring their dogs and watch and if interested trial their dogs.
Initial trialing starts with a handslip along the main straight and all being well the dog will then go further back along the track until it can run 2 bends. Training progresses to muzzle wearing, racing from the traps and eventually trialing with another dog where all being well the dog will be cleared for racing and will then be able to start racing competitively with dogs of similar skill. Experienced racers on hand to help and guide newcomers. Trained animal first aiders present.

Racing is done on a time handicap with advance and retard. This means all dogs get a chance of winning in their races and those that win get retarded a small distance whilst looser get advanced a small distance. The aim being for all dogs to race in close races where they all have a chance of winning and slower dogs don’t loose heart.

Newcomers are recommended to bring their dogs with a secure fitting collar as they can get very excited and any escapees could put themselves and other dogs at risk. (Fines implemented for any carelessness) Dogs should also be well socialized (i.e. non-aggressive) and have reasonable recall skills. The aim of our club is to for families and their dogs to come along have some fun, promote fitness and train their dogs in a relaxed environment.

Midway handslip trials are £2.50, trials from the traps and racing entries are £5.00 per dog with a maximum payment of £15 per owner for multiple dog entries.

At the end of the bend racing season (March time) There will be an Open event raising money for charity and promoting dog racing. It is currently early on it’s organizing but it is hoped this will be a well sponsored event which will gain some media attention for the benefit of all concerned.

Some photos of dogs currently running at the club. Photographer present and purchases can be made for any wanting a keepsake. (Generally about £2.50)

Hi

In approx 1966 we trial a dog called Zac (whippet ) at Westhoughton at 5 months old,Just 15 yards every one said we would cripple it as its bones had not set. We did the same with a dog called Jefferson (Greyhound ). They both turned out to be two of the BEST dogs ever to grace Westhoughton track even if I do say so myself, My dad was a AAA sprint coach, I knew the method Would catch on.
Good luck with the racing.

Best Regards Grant
