Just thought i'd try on here first before I go to the LR Forums as I find the people on here are a bit more easy going!

Right, I have a 1989 Range Rover fitted with a standard fitted 2.4TD VM Land Rover engine.

On the M1 yesterday she was plodding along at around 65-70mph then the engine started lightly knocking which sound like it was from the top part of the engine, I pulled on to the hard shoulder but before I came to a stop the engine cut out. After looking under ther bonnet for any obvious signs I tried to start her up. She struggled/didn't sound right and would'nt start so I got her recoverd.

Now when I try to start it she struggles to start but when started there's still the knocking from what seems to be the top end of the engine.

ANY IDEAS??

I don't mind If the engine is f****d as I was thinking of possibly putting in a 200TDI in her soon anyway but just not this year. (I may not have a bloody choice now!)

Will a 200TDI fit into my RR as I've been told mine has the LT77 gearbox?

I would be VERY greatfull for any help.

Thanks MRD.

yep owned em for years...could be crank pressure if you take oil cap off is thier loads of pressure if you place your hand over oil filler when running? or another fav on em the turbo fins disintigrate in to engine? or could be crank on way out or big ends? if hard to start when cold odds are that the engine is semi siezing? hard to tell unless i hear it running if i can help let me know

you would be better to fit 200 tdi as the na and turbo versions on landys all go at some point plus you feel the differance when you do it bit of fabrication involved tho down pipe ..oil cooler pipes and studs off gear box to enable it to but up

There is pressure when cap is off but have'nt looked at the Turbo blades yet as the cars still at the services. Could it be towed with a straight bar or would I need to trailer it? Thanks MRD.

You may well be better off buying a disco with a rotten floor in it for a couple of hundred quid then use the engine/box rad etc and possibly the zorst into your rangie :) you would be able to fleabay the rest then, axles steering box etc.

I had a Defender 300TDI which was acracking truck but I was thinking more the 200TDi as i'm told I would'nt need to change the box? A chap on a LR forum says to stick with the VM engine as it's better then th TDi's?

It has just had a full service INC All filters so I would'nt think they'd be much wrong with the Fuel system?

I run an old VM and must say they are noisey buggers but touch wood had no problems .Uses no oil good on diesel always starts and pulls like a train.Had it over 5 years now..It did have a rebore and new pistons ,new heads etc a year before I bought it ..Best £400 I ever spent just put tyres and filters on it Ill run it till it drops apart.Surely a local diesel fitter could tell you whats wrong with it.

Where would I find a Diesel Fitter? Yell? Thompsons? I will only start with a lot of pedel now so the fuel idea may be worth looking into what and how should I check?

does it have the 2nd fuel filter near the fuel tank like a disco does if so make sure that was changed in service because very often its not,is the lift pump ok do you have any dodgy pipes or fittings whats letting air in and letting diesel drain back slighty otherwise yeah find a diesel fitter or a deisel service place they will be able to check your injectors and injector pump.If the vehicle is that good just get a rotten 200 tdi disco and swap it over 200s dont suffer with head problems like the 300 does .

Get a can of diesel and take a pipe from that direct to your fuel filter under the bonnet ,or direct to your injector pump ..If she fires up ok then you know the fault is fuel delivery..Myself I think the problem is elsewhere..It wouldnt knock through lack of diesel but would if there was too much.Like if it turns over for a good while before firing up it will knock ..Does it smoke when running??
